Embodied Groove

This is one of my favorite things to watch in an Embodied Groove experience. 💗

The reciprocity of the give and take.

Musicians creating in the moment, responding to the movement in front of them.

Bodies responding to the music.

People turning toward each other. Connecting, laughing, grooving.

Then bringing that energy back into the whole. 💞

No one is simply receiving.

We’re creating the experience together.

This isn’t unique to Embodied Groove.

This reciprocity is central to so much of the live music I love - the musicians responding to the audience, the audience responding to the music, and all of us affecting what happens next.

Embodied Groove intentionally plays with that relationship.

And it’s one of the things I’m most interested in exploring through Groove Medicine.

Music moves us.

We move each other.

And what we give changes the music right back. 💃🏻🎶🕺✨

Super excited to announce this year’s Embodied Groove lineup for Camp Deep End Music Festival Camp Navarro, CA, 9/25-9/27.

Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz, Nat Keefe, Jen Rund, Lucas Carlton, Chris Hoogewerff, and Brendan Bliu will be creating the live groove for our movement flow! 💃🏻🎶🕺

Each experience is unique, created in the moment, inspired by the movement and setting, and guided by the Embodied Groove flow. ✨

Wtf do you mean? As a group of women looked up.

This is the question - “Are you here by yourself?” - we got more than anything at the very first Ladies Retreat to Phish at Dick’s in 2017.

As if we needed a guy to not be alone.

The ironic thing is, all but one of us had been seeing Phish for well over a decade.

But it is true this was the first time for many without a male companion at the shows.

What happened?

Together, we were magnetic. 🧲

Drawing in other ladies as we gathered for pre-show intention setting.

And even guys who were so inspired by our energy they wanted to help protect the space we’d created around us.

There is a magical synergy that happens when women gather around something they’re passionate about that inspires them and makes them feel alive. 💞

It’s happening already for the retreat to Dick’s this weekend.

Connections formed from joining the retreat that feel cosmically aligned. 💖

We haven’t even made it to the same physical space yet.

But I know when we do it will be even more powerful. ⚡️⭕️

Because there is something that happens when women gather around something they’re genuinely drawn to.

Something that lights them up. 🔥

That lets them move and play and express themselves.

That gives them permission to be their full self.

We don’t have to try to be magnetic.

We are.

And nine years later, I hear that question a little differently.

“Are you here by yourselves?”

Yep.

And look what happens when we are! 💃🏻✨

And then there were two…

I am very excited to announce that (pictured left) has officially completed the Embodied Groove facilitator training and is now certified to lead Embodied Groove classes and live experiences. 💃🏻🙌🏼⚡️

I cannot wait to see where Embodied Groove pops up next! Stay tuned…

For now, let’s give a big “heck yeah!!” to this bright light bringing even more embodied expression into the world!! 💃🏻🌟🕺

I’m really excited to be offering Embodied Groove for Kids at Cragmont Elementary’s after-school enrichment program this Fall!

Embodied Groove for Kids is a fun and welcoming movement class where kids explore fun and simple ways to move their body to music while building confidence and body awareness.

No performance.
No complicated choreography.
Just having fun moving the body.

Through games, expressive movement, mindfulness, and dance-inspired activities, students develop mobility, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and balance, all while having a great time.

Students will leave class feeling energized, confident, connected, and empowered to be themselves. 💃🏻🙌🏼🕺

Perfect for 3rd–5th graders of all movement abilities, no dance experience required!

If you have friends at Cragmont Elementary School in Berkeley, CA, let them know this is a new option this year!

This Saturday, 5/16, I’ll be leading Embodied Groove to kick off Divided Sky Foundation’s Music on the Mountain festival day.

This collaboration is deeply meaningful in many ways.

First, this is a sober festival to celebrate and fundraise for Divided Sky, Trey Anastasio’s rehabilitation center in Ludlow, Vermont.

Embodied Groove was birthed from my journey into learning how to dance like everyone is watching without needing substances to soften defenses and give that liquid courage I used to think I needed to move freely and expressively... even as a dancer.

But this kind of dance is not about performance.

It’s about feeling, sensation, and connection.

And that can feel vulnerable, especially as a human who’s been through “stuff” that makes it difficult to move freely and be witnessed authentically by others.

While I am not personally sober, I have traversed my own journey with substances and my relationship with them.

And I am deeply grateful for Trey’s sobriety. 🙏🏼

It was through Phish’s music that I found my embodied groove and learned how to express my unique essence through movement to music as it moves through me.

Now I get to support others in theirs. 💃🏻💞

Embodied Groove starts promptly at 12:15pm and leads right into the Trombone Shorty Foundation band’s second line.

Not sure who’s brilliant idea it was to pair Embodied Groove with a second line (participatory & celebratory crowd involved parade to an incredible brass band) to get the day started, but 👏🏼, it is 👌.
