Full event description -
In our capitalist and individualistic society today, we are conditioned to turn a blind eye to the most vulnerable on our streets and in our neighborhoods. However, our faith tradition commands us to ensure that the basic needs of those around us are fulfilled. The Prophet PBUH informs us that every child of Adam has a right to housing, clothing, food and water.
In this event (open to students and community members), we’ll be having a conversation with community leader Sister Amelah, who has been leading mutual aid and collective care efforts for decades in the Oakland/Berkeley area and beyond. Sister Amelah will share more about her own journey getting into this work, discuss the trends she’s noticed of the types of help folks need and highlight the importance of our faith community getting more involved.
Dinner will be provided!
Amelah El-Amin is a mother, grandmother, and African American Muslim human rights activist. She has been serving our community for over 25 years. She co-founded Mu’eed, Inc, a non-profit which has coordinated Humanitarian Day in Oakland for over a decade, a program which services homeless residents and low-income children. In addition to feeding the hungry, she advocates for elderly.

This event is co-sponsored by UC Berkeley MSA Cal Muslim Mental Health Initiative (MMHI) The Shifa Society (UC Berkeley Chapter) MU'EED

In our Monday Majlis series, we've been delving into the meanings of the Quranic chapter Al Fatihah [The Opening]. Last night, we discussed the virtues behind the statement "Alhamdulillah" [All Praise and Thanks are due to God] and the power in invoking the remembrance of the Divine in times of ease and difficulty.
We took a lesson from the life of our beloved martyr Khalifah Marcellus Williams who taught us what it means to praise Allah. He was an imam, poet and community leader who cared for his people, even going so far as to learn sign language to be able to communicate with one of the deaf members of his community. Khalifah, like thousands of others, was incarcerated for nearly 25 years before being murdered by the state for a crime he did not commit.
Lastly, we reflected on the powerful Prophetic narration that evey breath of ours has a duty attached to it for us to praise and thank our Creator by showing up for the world around us.

Last night at Monday Majlis, our students heard the story of one of our community members whose family is fighting deportation by ICE. We discussed the tactical ways students can support them and how this struggle connects to our faith tradition.
As we witness the 25th anniversary of 9/11 (in the aftermath of which ICE was created), we understand that our community's struggle against oppression is not isolated but rather building upon the centuries long fight against systems of white supremacy, capitalism, and militarism.
Faces blurred to protect privacy.
