First, thanks to everyone for your calls, texts, messages, and kindness during and after my last Radio Dunya for Michael Megasoup. The archived show is linked in my bio, and replayable for one more week until 10/14.

October is kind of an emotionally whiplashy month for me between grief and joy and seasonal change. I’m taking a break from the KALX schedule this week to prepare for my next show — a pop-up this Saturday, October 10th, at Teance in Berkeley, where I’ll be providing music for a terrific lineup of Taiwanese vendors, makers, artisans and creatives. This sloppily staged photo is a glimpse of how I’ve been sorting through my collection in preparation of bringing an all-Taiwan mix (incl. Taiwanese American and other intergenerational hybrids) on both digital and TANGIBLE PHYSICAL MEDIA to spin and share!

I’ll repost and share stories about this event in upcoming days. And a tentative word of caution to any new eyes on this IG, I’m not a business or professional media person (in that I rarely get paid for what I do). This account has long straddled a mix of public and personal, befitting what I try to do on the radio, transmitting whatever/whenever to receptive audiences, whomever that may be. 📡 👂👽🌌 My primary love languages are music, food, and art — and it’s going to be the whole trifecta at the TAIWANESE PARTY this Saturday!! 🇹🇼🫶🎶💝

On the second anniversary of Michael / DJ Megasoup’s passing, I think I’m finally ready to do a memorial radio show. In my own way, every show I’ve done since October 1, 2024 has been in his memory. I finally feel as ready as I can be to speak on air about the depths of my personal loss, and also to celebrate the world of music that we shared.

It’s fitting to offer this tribute today on 🌎Radio Dunya🌍, KALX’s weekly world music specialty show, Wednesday 9/30 from 5 - 6 PM 🌏. It’s going to be a truly eclectic mix traveling all over the globe, especially to African, Latin American, and South and Southeast Asian hot spots that comprised so much of Michael’s record collection, now under my care. These precious objects are steeped with memories from our frequent show & tell & listening sessions over the years, and from his many shows on KALX and on this specialty show in particular.

But record collections are meaningless without a means, or medium, to share. We had talked often about this, knowing he had too much music to listen to in a lifetime. So this mission shall extend across multiple lifetimes, sending good music forth into the world, trusting in radio to help it find its way to SOMEone’s appreciative ears, somewhere out there.

Gotta admit, I’m feeling all kinds of nerves prepping what to play and say on today’s show, which will be broadcast live from the studio, unfiltered and raw and real. Will do my best to invoke the power of memories, music, and radio as my favorite human-hearted medium. 💗

I’m back on air tomorrow KALX Berkeley 90.7 FM at 9:30 AM Pacific Time. At 11 AM, I’ll air a recent interview with Marina dream crease ☆ marina and TJ PFR Records about Dream Crease’s new album, Blue Hour in the Living Room, soon to be released on PFR Records. We talk about microcosms and birds and DIY and collabs and upcoming shows in the Bay Area and college radio. Lots of laughter, delight, and wonder in this interview, even though I had to chop out a bunch for the sake of time, including parts where we all made noises in response to cute animals on screen 😸.

There will be a giveaway to passes at Dream Crease’s upcoming LO-FI OYSTER CO. show at Local Economy on 9/25 sometime in that last hour. And no passes needed to the upcoming 9/26 Earthling show cuz that’s free at Golden Gate Park.

The most difficult thing about doing one hour specialty shows is figuring out how to focus your playlist when you have tooooo many options 😵‍💫. Not that I’m complaining about bounty!
