UC Jazz Ensembles is a student program dedicated to the performance, study, and promotion of jazz at UC Berkeley. We provide rehearsal space and instruction for ten to twelve ensembles each year, composed primarily of Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students and community members from the Bay Area. Currently, UC Jazz consists of 12 combos ranging from intermediate to advanced levels and the Intro to Jazz DeCal. Rehearsals are held in the lower level of the Cesar Chavez student center down the hall in our UC Jazz department. In 2011, we introduced a DeCal Combo for course credit, and in Fall 2012, we started a beginning jazz DeCal to introduce students to the basics of jazz theory and history for people who want to learn how to improvise a jazz solo. In addition to our weekly combos, UC Jazz occasionally hosts guest artists from the jazz world for clinics. In February 2011 and 2012, we have three days of workshops with students from Japan who focus on drums/percussion, guitar, and bass. Meet our ensemble leaders, who are all professional musicians:

Ted Moore (Percussion) - Director of UC Jazz Ensembles; Advanced and Intermediate Combos
Frank Martin (Piano) - Advanced Combo
Dann Zinn (Tenor Saxophone) - Advanced Combo
Glenn Richman (Bass) - Intermediate Combo
Marty Wehner (Trombone) - Intermediate Combo
