Greetings, Golden Bears!
Looking for a way to connect with your peers, while also strengthening your language skills and broadening your cultural horizons?
The SLC’s Language Exchange Program invites you to join us for meaningful connection and language learning this semester. Whether you’re a novice hoping to become more fluent in a new language, a native speaker looking to keep your language skills fresh, or somewhere in between, we have a variety of low-pressure opportunities to develop your linguistic skills and expand your cultural horizons.
In our pair/trio format, you can be matched with 1-2 peers who are proficient in the language you’d like to practice and who are seeking support with a language you know. It’s a great, flexible option for language exchange. If you’re interested in something more structured, you can join our language pods, weekly practice sessions facilitated by LEP Student Coordinators where you can find consistent support and connect with peers learning the same language. We also offer conversation groups, weekly small groups hosted by fellow students who are proficient in the language.
Join us to enhance your language skills while engaging with the rich diversity of Cal’s global community. To learn more and attend an orientation, visit our website: bit.ly/orient-LEP. See you soon!

Dear Golden Bears and Community Members,
The Student Learning Center’s peer learning community is facing a significant challenge.
The University is proposing a 20% cut in SLC’s tutor and student staff budget—a reduction that would mean approximately 11,000 fewer hours of peer learning and academic support, about 70 fewer student employee positions, and fewer opportunities for students to learn, connect, and grow together.
The SLC has supported many scholars in their learning, helped them to build confidence, and provided a space for them to ask questions, collaborate, and grow. These services are peer-led and at risk due to the proposed budget cut.
We encourage you to add your name to this petition (bit.ly/protectslc) calling on University leadership to reconsider this reduction and protect SLC’s peer learning model. We urge you to affirm the importance of undergraduate learning by making your voice heard.
The SLC has always been more than a place to get support with coursework. It is a community where students learn how to learn, find connection and belonging, take intellectual risks, discover what they are capable of, and help one another thrive.
At this moment of financial pressure, Berkeley must decide what it will protect. We believe the learning, development, and support of undergraduates should remain among the University’s highest priorities.
Join us in speaking up for our learning community that has supported so many Berkeley students: bit.ly/protectslc.
