CARE FOR THE EARTH AND SAINT FRANCIS
“I thought that environmental problems were the loss of biodiversity, the destruction of ecosystems and climate change.I thought that with thirty years of good scientific progress, these problems could be halted. But I was wrong. The main environmental problems are egoism, greed, and apathy, and to face them we need a spiritual and cultural transformation. And we, as scientists, do not know what to do.”—James Gustave Speth

This was the candid confession of James Gustave Speth, who served for more than a decade as the dean of Yale University’s prestigious School of the Environment. Speth was influential in shaping environmental policy both in the United States and around the world. He was head of the United Nations Environment Program…

I am convinced that our current environmental degradation has much deeper roots than is generally assumed. The ecological crisis is, in fact, symptomatic of a deeper spiritual, cultural, and ultimately relational crisis. The crisis is a reflection of the deep disharmony within us that results from the rupture of the basic relationships that weave and sustain our existence…- Catholic Theologian Joshtrom Kureethadam, from the Introduction to Ecological Sin: Rupture of Relationships

"If the [guardian] angel’s job description is to keep you breathing, the results are pretty poor. People die all the time... We shrank them down until they fit in our hands as decorations, or in our pockets as lucky talismans. [But] the real role of an Angel is to announce, attend/escort and interpret. None of that is a Christmas decoration, or charm against harm. All of it, however, is participation in a particular story."
— Dr. Jason Swan Clark, The London Centre for Spiritual Direction

Creation Tide and What it Means to Be Human
the latest news on our news page, link in bio
- Saturday September 12 - Return to Downtown Beverly + Potluck
- The Growing Children's Ministry at Trinity

This Sunday we begin Creation Season, a growing liturgical observation around the world. It began when the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (Eastern Orthodox) proposed in 1989 that September 1st (the first day of the Orthodox Church year) should be observed as a day “of protection of the natural environment”. In 2016, Pope Francis declared 1 September an annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This was expanded in Europe to be a season — Creation tide — going from September 1st until October 4th (the Feast of St Francis), and has been adopted in many churches around the world, including some in the Anglican Communion.

This year we will be asking what it means to be a human being: what does it mean both to be wired for eternity, with a deep spirit and soul, and at the same time, to be embodied and have our senses and our bodily functions communicate so much to us?
