Exhibit uses dirt from Birmingham’s 99 neighborhoods to reckon with the city’s segregated past The artist visited every neighborhood with a shovel and bucket, meeting residents and hearing their stories while collecting materials for the Civil Rights Institute show.

It was meaningful to see so many neighbors gather to reflect on Birmingham's history and the stories behind how our city's 99 neighborhoods and 23 communities came to be, and how those histories continue to shape our lives today.
