Scrollworks
Where Every Child Is Noteworthy! Scrollworks offers affordable music lessons to children ages 6-18.
The Metropolitan Youth Orchestras of Central Alabama (MYOCA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation dedicated to making music instruction and ensemble playing available to all, thereby developing character and sense of community. Young people of diverse racial, social, cultural, and economic backgrounds are encouraged to explore and cultivate their musical talent and contribute to Alabama's musical culture. Founded in 2007, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestras of Central Alabama (MYOCA) brings children from across the Birmingham area together in orchestra, the team sport for youth passionate about music. Since so many children have lost access to music education in their schools due to budget cuts, the Scrollworks program was created in 2008 to teach orchestral instruments. Over 200 students participate each year. 71% of our students come from homes with an income below the state median. 60% are African-American, 33% are white, 4% are Asian/Indian

A few spaces remain in our new Dulcimer Build & Play Class, beginning Saturday, September 5!
Students ages 13–18 will assemble a Backyard Music dulcimer like the kit shown here and then learn to play it with Bob Crosby. No previous woodworking or musical experience is required, and each student will keep the completed instrument.
The class meets at 10:00 a.m. on Scrollworks teaching Saturdays and is limited to five participants. The $200 fee includes the dulcimer kit, materials, and instruction. Students must perform with the class at our December 5 concert.

This fall, Scrollworks is creating our own performance of **The Nelken Line**, a community dance project based on a sequence from Pina Bausch’s *Nelken* ("Carnations").
The movements represent spring, summer, autumn, and winter and are simple enough for people of different ages, abilities, and levels of dance experience to perform together. Our students will learn the choreography, with student and adult Nelken Line Leaders helping teach the movements, while the Scrollworks Orchestra performs **“West End Blues”** live.
Our Nelken Line will be part of our semester concert on **December 5**, and we hope to find ways for members of the wider community to participate as the project develops.
Here’s one example of what a Nelken Line can look like:

Want to see how our performance comes together? **Like or follow the Scrollworks page**, or sign up for our newsletter at **myorch.org**. We’ll share updates about the project and information about opportunities to participate.
And if you know a young person ages 8–18 who would like to make music with us this fall, registration is still open. Details are at https://www.myorch.org/fall-2026
