A student’s sadness is not a classroom disruption.
When a child arrives visibly sad, an adult may feel pressure to get the day moving. But asking the child to “fix” the feeling before entering sends a message: some emotions are acceptable here, and others must be hidden.
Emotional regulation does not require a student to stop feeling sad. It helps them recognize what they feel, access support, and make choices about what comes next.
Educators need support in that moment, too. Staying present with a student’s emotion while managing a classroom draws on adult capacity. It is a skill schools can develop and support.
The Regulated Educator Capacity Index™ offers educators a free, approximately seven-minute reflection across five domains: Body, Emotional, Response, Co-Regulation, and Recovery. It provides a snapshot of strengths and areas that may need attention.

We would like to reintroduce ourselves.
For the past three years, Exhale to Excel has been working alongside schools to help students develop the emotional and regulatory capacity they need to learn, connect, recover, and make thoughtful decisions.
What began as a response to a need we could clearly see in Birmingham classrooms has grown into a system-level Emotional Literacy, Regulation, and Academic Readiness Framework for K-12 schools.
To date, Exhale to Excel has:
➡️ Reached more than 1,000 students.
➡️ Partnered with 12 schools.
➡️ Supported students across Grades 3–12.
➡️ Developed distinct curricula for elementary, middle, and high school students.
➡️ Expanded support across student programming, educator development, and school partnerships.
➡️ Developed the Regulated Educator Capacity Index to help educators understand their current capacity across regulation, emotional awareness, response, co-regulation, and recovery.
➡️ Developed a facilitator training and certification pathway that prepares educators, therapists, social workers, administrators, and other student-serving professionals to facilitate the Exhale to Excel curriculum within their approved grade band and licensing scope.
Our work helps students, educators, and schools build the capacity to recognize what is happening, reflect on what may be beneath it, regulate through challenge, relate with greater awareness, and respond with intention; strengthening relationships, decision-making, and readiness across the learning environment.
Although much of this work has been happening inside schools, we have not consistently shared the journey, insights, evidence, and lessons behind it here.
That is changing.
We will be using this space to share more about emotional literacy, regulation, educator capacity, school implementation, student impact, and what it takes to move from behavior management toward sustainable capacity.
We invite school leaders, educators, counselors, student-support professionals, families, and community partners to follow the work and join the conversation.
This is Exhale to Excel.
Regulation makes readiness possible.

Over the past three years, Exhale To Excel has evolved.
What began as a body-based approach to supporting emotional regulation through breathing practices, mindfulness, movement, and somatic tools has grown into a comprehensive Emotional Literacy, Regulation & Academic Readiness Framework serving students in grades 3–12.
While our framework has expanded, our foundation remains the same.
We continue to believe that emotional regulation is not simply a cognitive skill. It is an embodied skill.
Students experience emotions in their bodies before they can effectively communicate them, understand them, or make thoughtful decisions about them.
That is why breathing practices, body awareness, nervous system regulation, mindfulness, and somatic strategies remain at the heart of Exhale To Excel.
Through our work in schools, one thing became increasingly clear:
Students cannot consistently access learning when they are overwhelmed, emotionally activated, disconnected, or lacking the skills to navigate challenges effectively.
Academic success is not only influenced by what students know.
It is also influenced by their ability to recognize emotions, regulate responses, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, navigate conflict, and make thoughtful decisions.
This evolution led us to clarify and organize our work into three interconnected frameworks:
➡️ The 5R Framework — How students navigate challenges.
➡️ The B.R.E.A.T.H. Framework — What students learn.
➡️ The E.X.H.A.L.E. Framework — Who students become.
Together, these frameworks help students strengthen emotional literacy, regulation, communication, relationship skills, decision-making, and academic readiness.
At Exhale To Excel, we believe emotional literacy is not separate from learning.
It is part of the foundation that helps students engage, persist, connect, and thrive.
Because when students learn to regulate, they learn to excel.

We are honored to receive the Stronger Together Partnership Award from Fairfield City Schools.
For the past three years, Exhale To Excel has partnered with Fairfield City Schools to support students in grades 3–12 through our Emotional Literacy and Regulation (ELR) Framework.
Our ELR Framework equips students with the skills to understand their emotions, regulate their nervous systems, build healthy relationships, navigate conflict, and make intentional choices. These competencies serve as a bridge between emotional well-being and academic readiness, helping students become successful learners, leaders, and community members.
We are grateful for the opportunity to support Fairfield students, educators, and families, and to witness the growth that happens when schools invest in emotional regulation as a foundation for student success.
Thank you, Emily with Fairfield City Schools, for your partnership, trust, and commitment to the well-being of your students.
💙 Together, we are stronger.

This week, Exhale to Excel partnered with to facilitate our Awareness lesson with 80 students at Leeds Elementary School.
Awareness is one of the foundational lessons in our Emotional Literacy & Regulation (ELR) curriculum because before we can regulate, relate, repair, or respond, we must first become aware.
Students explored the difference between internal awareness and external awareness and how both are connected to our five senses. Through what we see, hear, smell, taste, and touch, we become aware of what’s happening around us. We also learn to notice what’s happening within us, our emotions, sensations, thoughts, and needs.
One of the activities we played was Feeling Charades, where students acted out emotions while their classmates guessed what they were feeling. The activity sparked an important conversation: emotions don’t always look the same on everyone. Sometimes people express emotions differently than we would.
Students learned that it’s important to be aware of others, but it’s equally important to communicate what we’re feeling rather than expecting others to know. We also discussed the importance of balance, not becoming so focused on what’s happening around us that we lose connection with ourselves, and not becoming so focused on ourselves that we lose connection with others.
Awareness is the bridge between what we feel, what we experience, and how we choose to respond.
Thank you to Healthy Coping Club for the opportunity to support these amazing students. 💙

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to step into a space with students at JCCLC… and it was more than a presentation, it was connection.
We shared what it looks like to turn lived experience into purpose. Not just what we do, but why this work exists.
Because the truth is—
Many of our young people are navigating real-life challenges while being asked to show up, focus, and perform.
And what we offered them was this:
✨ You are not your circumstances.
✨ You have the power to pause, regulate, and choose differently.
✨ There is purpose on the other side of your story.
Through the Exhale to Excel Emotional Regulation & Academic Readiness Framework, we’re building something deeper than a program, we’re building a regulated school culture.
A culture where students are guided through the E.X.H.A.L.E. process:
• Embody — Notice sensations and internal signals.
• eXpress — Name and express emotions safely.
• Honor — Recognize needs and boundaries.
• Align — Align actions with values and goals.
• Link — Build supportive relationships.
• Excel — Apply regulation for learning and growth.
This is how students move from reaction → regulation → response.
“I give myself permission to exhale… that I may excel.”
Grateful for JCCLC and every student who allowed us to see them, hear them, and connect with them.

Nope.
𝗔 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁. When a child melts down, their nervous system is overwhelmed. Instead of punishment, they need tools to regulate.
💡 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: Get on their level, take a deep breath together, and remind them, “You’re safe, and I’m here to help.” It makes all the difference.

This doesn’t happen by accident.
What you’re seeing is not just students sitting in meditation. You’re seeing nervous system regulation, emotional literacy, and intentional classroom culture in action.
The Exhale to Excel program is research-backed and outcome-driven. We use mindfulness, breathwork, movement, and SEL practices grounded in neuroscience to help students regulate their bodies so they can access focus, learning, and connection.
This is how educators can create classrooms like this:
• regulate before instruction.
• use breath and movement as learning tools.
• teach emotional literacy, not just behavior compliance.
• build calm environments where students feel safe in their bodies.
When students are regulated, instruction lands differently. When classrooms are calm, learning accelerates.
This is not about control.
This is about regulation.
And it’s teachable.
Exhale to Excel equips educators with the tools to make this possible, every day, in real classrooms.

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐝? That moment says more than words ever could.
When kids don’t have the words to explain how they feel, their bodies speak for them.
Tense shoulders. Clenched jaws. Sudden outbursts or quiet withdrawals.
These aren’t just “bad behaviors”, they’re signs of emotional overload. And more often than not, they just need a safe space to 𝑒𝑥ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑒.
Children aren’t just learning math or reading, they’re learning how to be ℎ𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑛. They deserve tools that help them feel safe in their bodies, not just behave in classrooms.
Want to help a child breathe easier today?
Explore how movement, mindfulness, and emotional support can change the way they show up in life, with 𝐄𝐱𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥. Let’s raise emotionally aware, self-regulating leaders, one breath at a time.
