The Waterfall Beneath the Ocean

There's a waterfall underneath the ocean or at least what your eyes will tell you.

Off the coast of Mauritius, an incredible underwater landscape creates the illusion of a giant waterfall plunging into the depth of the Indian Ocean. But the water isn't actually falling.

Sand and sediment are being carried off a shallow underwater shelf into deeper water. Viewed from above, the colors and contours create a spectacular optical illusion.

From the air, it looks as though someone pulled the plug from the ocean.

The American Town that Has Been Burning Underground for More than 60 Years.

What if a fire started underneath your town and nobody put it out?

That's essentially what happened in Centralia, Pennsylvania.

In 1962, a fire ignited in an abandoned coal mine beneath the community. It spread through a maze of underground coal seams, and despite numerous attempts to extinguish it, the fire continued burning beneath the town.

Over the years, cracks opened in the ground, smoke and gases escaped from beneath the surface, and concerns about dangerous carbon monoxide grew. Eventually, most residents accepted government relocation offers. Houses were demolished, streets emptied, and a once busy Pennsylvania coal town nearly disappeared.

The underground fire is still burning.

Experts have estimated that enough coal remains underground for the fire to continue for many more decades, or even centuries. A handful of residents were eventually permitted to remain for the rest of their lives, making Centralia one of America's strangest near-ghost towns.

Today, it isn't a place to wander around looking for smoke or exploring abandoned areas; the underground conditions can be dangerous, and some property is privately owned.
