Big Bamboo Fly Rod Maker Energy!

Oyster’s September 7-12, 2026 bamboo fly rod making class brought 10 makers (5 repeats & 5 new students) with the best energy!

4️⃣William, from Athens, GA, returned for his 4th class. He visited Oyster’s workshop for 15 years before signing up for his 1st rod-building class. William & his brother, Joe, attend class every year together & say it’s the highlight of their year. He made a favorite around the workshop…an 8’ 7wt.

3️⃣Joe, also from Athens, joined us for his 3rd class. He says making a bamboo rod at Oyster is more than a fly rod or a class—it’s about the experience, the people, & the purpose. Joe made an 8’ 6wt.

🏞️John joined us from Fairhope, AL, for his 1st class. His wife found Oyster & signed him up. John invited his friend, Scott, to join him—of course, he said yes! John crafted an 8’ 6wt for fly fishing the Toccoa River the day after class.

🌊Scott was here from Monterey, CA, for his 1st class. He says he’s a novice fly fisherman, but he confidently handcrafted an 8’ 6wt for his first bamboo rod. Scott said the week was exceptional.

3️⃣Brad, from Leesburg, GA, returned for his 3rd class & brought his sister-in-law, Katie. Brad said his favorite rod so far was this one—an 8’ 9wt built for fly fishing in FL & the Bahamas.

🏝️Katie joined us from Bradenton, FL, for her 1st class. She originally asked Brad to build her a rod, but decided to make her own instead. Katie built an 8’ 9wt bamboo rod for redfish, snook, juvenile tarpon, & sea trout.

📍Gerry, a North GA local, took his 1st class at Oyster. The class was a retirement gift from his wife. Gerry wanted a fly rod for local waters, so he decided on an 8’ 5wt.

🏔️Robert, from CO, joined us for his 1st class & was here with Greg. He enjoys fly fishing small creeks, so he crafted a sweet 6’9” 3wt bamboo rod.

2️⃣Mike was here from Rome, GA, for his 2nd class. He says his favorite rod made at Oyster is his first—an 8’ 4wt. This time, he built an 8’ 7wt bamboo rod for larger trout & bass.

2️⃣Greg, from FL, was back for his 2nd class. He returns to craft bamboo rods at Oyster because the week is fulfilling.He made an 8’ 9wt saltwater bamboo rod, since he has never owned a saltwater fly rod.

Oyster’s August 24–29, 2026 bamboo fly rod making class brought back 4 repeat rod makers & welcomed 6 new students. Welcome, makers!

8️⃣John from Marietta, GA joined us for his 8th class. He is a woodworker & handcrafts bamboo rods as gifts for friends & family. John returns to Oyster often, & says Blue Ridge is great for the soul. This time, John made a 7’ 4wt.

4️⃣Jim was here for his 4th class & celebrated his birthday with us. Jim said each class pushes his creative abilities, & you leave with a beautiful bamboo fly rod. He built an 8’ 9wt for saltwater fly fishing.

2️⃣David from Murphy, NC was here for his 2nd class with his friend, Jim. He signed up before completing his first class last year. He says nothing compares to the feeling of accomplishment at the end of the week. David built an 8’ 7wt.

🔵Chris joined us from Chapel Hill, NC for his 1st class. He enjoys fly fishing & woodworking. When visiting Oyster in Blue Ridge last year, his wife encouraged him to sign up! Chris crafted a local favorite—an 8’ 5wt bamboo fly rod.

🌺Garner from Valdosta, GA attended his 1st Oyster class. He thought building a bamboo rod was a great way to spend the week. Garner crafted a 7’6” 4wt to fly fish smaller streams.

🌄Dave from Baton Rouge, LA—now Ellijay, GA—was here for his 2nd class. He enjoyed his first class so much that he signed up again & brought his son, Brian. Dave crafted an 8’ 5wt for North Georgia waters.

🎶Brian, Dave’s son, joined us from Brandon, MS. He said he couldn’t think of a better way to spend a week than handcrafting his 1st fly rod with his dad. Brian made an 8’ 6wt.

📍Jeff, a Texas native who now lives in Blue Ridge, attended his 1st bamboo rod-making class. Jim spoke highly of the class & convinced Jeff to sign up. Jeff built an 8’ 7wt bamboo rod to fly fish in Alaska.

🌲Ronald “Peele” was here from Murphy, NC for his 1st class. He said he likes a good challenge & decided to build his own bamboo fly rod. Peele crafted an 8’ 9wt for saltwater fly fishing.

🌊Scott joined us from Ft. Pierce, FL for his 1st class. He signed up after visiting Oyster’s on Main Street in Blue

“When you hand make a thing out of wood, it has a soul to it. We’ll start with a stalk of Tonkin bamboo. It’s going to be flamed with the propane torch and that’ll give us the color we’re looking for. From there, we’re going to do the varnish work, we’ll wrap on the guides with thread, and do the engraving. I think one of the biggest things that our company has done that set us apart from others is willingness to share what we do. We’ve had students from Argentina, South Africa, Taiwan, and to actually come and make a thing, is a really unique experience for people.”

“Oyster started just purely from a love of fly fishing. I didn’t always fly fish really until I came to Georgia and discovered the North Georgia mountains. I was actually looking to buy a fly rod when my wife, Shannen, said, “Why don’t you just make one yourself?” It took me six months to make the worst-looking, worst-casting rod ever made. The second one turned out a little better and before I knew it, I was in business.”
