The Apple Watch and the Illusion of Control

The must-have accessories of 2026 aren’t necklaces or designer handbags. Instead, everyone is clamoring for fitness trackers like the Apple Watch, Google Fitbit, and Oura Ring. Remarkably, roughly half of US adults own at least one wearable tracker.

These devices have evolved from:
Measurement (good) ➡️
Assessment (be cautious) ➡️
AI-generated Recommendations (be very cautious) ⚠️

They are impressive at measuring vital signs. They’re not nearly as good at assessment or recommendations. For example, most wearables are inconsistent at determining sleep stages (light vs. deep vs. REM)

Worse, because these trackers give us an endless stream of numbers, they create the illusion of precision. When our device proudly tells us we got 65 minutes of REM sleep last night, we’re more likely to trust it because the number feels so precise. But in truth, our REM time might have been anywhere from 50 to 90 minutes, and we’d never know. When we skip the gym because our readiness score is 21, we have no idea if that’s the right call.

In my work as a family office Chief Wellness Officer (CWO) and longevity physician, I recommend using wearables (paired with labs and other tests) to run mini self-experiments. That unlocks the real value in longevity care: personalization.

We must understand these devices’ limitations.

📊 Device precision leads to overtrusting (and potentially overfitting) the data.

❓ The lack of long-term studies means we don’t know the consequences (if any) of a sleep or readiness score.

🏆 Trackers should be combined with subjective data (how do you feel?) and objective outside data like labs and exercise performance.

🩺 Medical oversight can turn raw numbers into actionable insights.

🌬️ We can do everything “right,” and still have poor outcomes. Don’t obsess. We can’t control the future.

Longevity Isn't Immortality. Plan accordingly.
As a family office Chief Wellness Officer (CWO) and longevity physician, I must share the hard truth. Regardless of scientific advances and biohacking wishful thinking, immortality isn't and will never be in the cards.

If we're lucky, AI, pills, potions, exercise, sleep, peptides, etc., will grant us longer life and a lower risk of cancer or heart disease. Maybe another 10, 20, even 30 years. That's great. But it ain't forever.

The best-case scenario is "biological immortality," where aging is negligible but we're still at risk for trauma, disease, or poison.

What does all this mean? Eat healthy food, sleep, and exercise.

Just as importantly, live well. Have friends. Be kind to others. Travel. Find adventure. Seek purpose. Learn. Discover. Grow. Make a difference and find your peace.

Even the tortoise doesn't live forever.

Many Delta pilots have mixed feelings about retiring at 65. After so many years of travel, time away from home, and adventure, they understandably worry about what their next chapter will look like.
Money and savings aren't the problem. They worry:
- How will I feel being at home?
- Will I be bored?
- Will I pay the price for unhealthy habits and years of poor sleep?

Everyone is suddenly worried about the rise of a super-intelligent AGI system that will go all Terminator on us and destroy humanity. The Wall Street Journal, Jacob Coxon, and leaders from Anthropic and OpenAI are fielding calls to slow down AI development.

Decision-making expert Dr. Gregory Charlop explains why AI development will never slow down. It is all about Game Theory.

Here's how AI will (and won’t) impact your retirement:

AI as your life's operating system (if you are okay with the privacy risks) - If you can get past trust issues, AI can act as your interface with the world. Rather than learning each new app or technological gizmo (or driving your daughter-in-law crazy with questions), you can run much of your life through AI agents. They manage travel plans, order groceries, check your calendar for doctor appointments, sort pictures of your grandson's tennis lessons, and run many of your home's devices.

Safety - Paired with smart home devices, AI can be your eye in the sky to ensure you've taken your meds, opened your fridge in the morning, and haven't fallen. It can alert relatives at the first sign of trouble.

Companionship - Far too many retirees are lonely and isolated. For most busy dentists, doctors, and executives, our "friends" are our colleagues. The trouble is, these work friends tend to disappear when we retire. I encourage all my retirement medicine patients to cultivate genuine friends now, before retirement. That said, some data suggest AI can act as a **partial** substitute for human companionship and hold us over while we build our human friend network.

Robotic caretakers - The West has been having fewer kids for decades, resulting in a smaller workforce of young people willing to care for the elderly (demographic decline). In other words, good luck finding a quality caretaker in 10 or 20 years. While many nations are turning to robots for assistance (Japan and China are leading the way), don't expect all-purpose robotic caregivers to play an important role in your retirement plan anytime soon. Humanoid robots are much tougher to develop than LLMs. Robots may be good for repetitive tasks, but you'll still need to manage your household.
