🧠 Good News for Brain Health: Americans Are Drinking Less

There is encouraging news for our nation’s health: alcohol consumption in the United States has been declining, particularly among younger generations. This is a positive trend that could have lasting benefits for brain health.

As a neurologist, I often remind my patients that alcohol is a neurotoxin. While society has long normalized drinking, alcohol has no essential role in maintaining a healthy brain. Even moderate alcohol consumption has been associated in research with an increased risk of cognitive decline, stroke, sleep disruption, peripheral neuropathy, and several types of cancer.

Your brain is your most valuable organ. Every day, it performs billions of complex tasks that allow you to think, remember, move, and enjoy life. Protecting it should be a lifelong priority.

The good news is that the brain has an incredible ability to recover. Reducing—or eliminating—alcohol can lead to improvements in sleep, memory, concentration, mood, and overall neurological health. It may also reduce your long-term risk of dementia and other chronic diseases.

If you don’t drink, don’t start. If you do drink, consider drinking less—or stopping altogether. Your brain, your heart, your liver, and your future self will thank you.

At the Espinosa Neuroscience Institute, we believe that prevention is one of the most powerful forms of medicine.

Protect your brain. Protect your future.

Today I reflect with deep gratitude on the incredible impact that Bernie Marcus had on my career and on the future of the Espinosa Neuroscience Institute.

ENI would not exist today if it were not for the chain of events that began with Bernie Marcus’s extraordinary vision. His commitment to advancing neuroscience led to the creation of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute in Boca Ratón Regional Hospital 2014, where I was given the privilege and opportunity to build and lead the neurology and neuroscience program. That experience shaped my career, my leadership, and ultimately inspired the creation of the Espinosa Neuroscience Institute.

Thank you, Bernie, not only for believing in neuroscience and opening doors for me professionally, but also for making it possible for our community to receive world-class, state-of-the-art neurological care. Your vision continues to improve the lives of countless patients through the work of everyone you inspired.

Your legacy lives on in every patient we care for and in every life we strive to improve.

Artificial Intelligence-Driven Call Center Operations in a High-Volume Neurology Practice: Impact on Access, Efficiency, Revenue Growth, and Cost Containment.

Healthcare is facing unprecedented challenges: workforce shortages, rising administrative costs, and increasing patient demand. Our study demonstrates how thoughtfully implemented artificial intelligence can help address these challenges while improving patient access—not by replacing healthcare professionals, but by allowing them to focus on what matters most: patient care.

Some of our key findings include:

âś… Over **5,400 patient communication encounters** managed in the first 86 days
âś… Communication backlog reduced by **more than 98%**
âś… Immediate answering of every incoming call with unlimited simultaneous call capacity
âś… Improved capture of new patient referrals and diagnostic testing (EEG, EMG, MRI)
âś… Estimated annual operational savings exceeding **$200,000** while enhancing patient access and efficiency

This research reflects our commitment at **Espinosa Neuroscience Institute** to combine innovation, technology, and compassionate care to improve the patient experience and strengthen healthcare delivery.

I am incredibly grateful to my co-authors, Yaira Espinosa and Juan Pablo Espinosa, whose dedication made this project possible.

Artificial intelligence is not the future of healthcare—it is already transforming how we deliver care today. The key is implementing it responsibly, ethically, and always with patients at the center.

🎉 **Today we celebrate one year of Espinosa Neuroscience Institute as an independent practice!** 🎉

What an incredible journey it has been.

One year ago, we took a leap of faith with one goal: to create a neuroscience institute where patients always come first, where innovation meets compassion, and where personalized neurological care is the standard—not the exception.

Over the past year, we have had the privilege of caring for thousands of patients, expanding our services, introducing new technologies and treatments, growing our infusion and research programs, and building an amazing team dedicated to improving lives every single day.

Most importantly, we have been blessed by the trust of our patients and the support of our families, friends, and community. Your confidence in us has made this first year possible, and for that, we are deeply grateful.

To our patients: thank you for allowing us to be part of your healthcare journey.

To our dedicated team: thank you for your compassion, professionalism, and commitment to excellence every day.

This is only the beginning. We look forward to many more years of advancing neuroscience, serving our community, and bringing hope to patients and families.

From all of us at **Espinosa Neuroscience Institute**—thank you for an unforgettable first year. Here's to the future! 🧠💙

Yesterday, millions of Ecuadorians experienced the heartbreak of seeing their national team eliminated from the World Cup. While it may seem “just a game,” neuroscience tells us it is much more than that.

When we strongly identify with a team, our brains process its victories and defeats almost as if they were our own. Brain regions involved in emotion, reward, and social identity become activated. A win triggers the release of dopamine, creating feelings of joy, pride, and hope. A loss, on the other hand, can temporarily activate the same neural circuits involved in disappointment and grief, explaining why fans may genuinely feel sadness, frustration, or even shed tears.

But there is an important lesson behind sports.

Sports are one of humanity’s healthiest forms of tribalism. They allow us to experience intense emotions, build community, and celebrate our identity—without real conflict. The final whistle reminds us that life goes on. Tomorrow we return to our families, our work, our health, and our dreams.

Supporting a team teaches resilience. We celebrate together, we suffer together, and we learn that setbacks are temporary. The same brain that feels disappointment today is capable of generating hope tomorrow.

To all Ecuador fans: thank you for believing, supporting, and dreaming. Your passion reflects one of the most beautiful aspects of the human brain—our extraordinary capacity to connect, to belong, and to hope again.

In the end, the greatest victory is not lifting the trophy, but preserving our humanity, our sportsmanship, and our ability to enjoy the beautiful game.

Penalty kicks are more than soccer — they are a test of the brain under extreme pressure.

As Germany and the Netherlands were knocked out of the World Cup on penalties, we saw how even elite athletes face the same human response: adrenaline, fear, focus, and the pressure of millions watching.

In those moments, success depends not only on skill, but on emotional control, breathing, routine, and mental resilience.

At Espinosa Neuroscience Institute, we see this as a powerful reminder: the brain performs best when it is trained to stay calm under pressure.

Champions feel pressure — they just learn how to perform through it.
