A resident turning 100 may be worth celebrating, but age alone does not always make it a media story.

The stronger angle may be what that resident has experienced, contributed or continues to do.

Perhaps she still volunteers every week. Maybe he recently learned to use new technology, has an unexpected connection to local history or is sharing a skill with a younger generation.

The birthday gives you a timely reason to tell the story. The person, and what makes that person distinctive, gives the media and its audience a reason to care.

Advertising and earned media serve different purposes.

An ad gives you control over the message, audience and timing. But when the campaign ends, its visibility often ends with it.

Earned media can keep working.

A meaningful news story can be shared by residents, families and team members. It can appear in online searches, live on your website and provide third-party credibility long after its original publication.

That credibility matters. A Nielsen global survey found that editorial content prompted action among 64% of respondents, compared with 55% for social media ads and 50% for online banner ads.

For senior living communities, where families are making an important and deeply personal decision, being seen is only part of the goal. Being remembered—and trusted—is what ultimately matters.

Paid media can help a community reach people. Earned media can give them a reason to believe what they see.

A photo shows us what happened. The caption should tell us why it mattered.

Instead of simply writing, “Residents enjoyed an afternoon of painting,” give readers something the photo cannot:

Was someone trying watercolor for the first time? Did a resident with a lifelong love of art lead the class? Did the activity bring back a meaningful memory?

That small piece of context can turn an ordinary social media update into a story that helps families understand the people and experiences that shape life in your community.

Securing earned media coverage is not the final step. It is the beginning of what you can do with it.

This South Dade News Leader feature was repackaged as a branded email, giving the story a second audience and directing readers to both the full article and the community’s website.

An earned media placement can also be:

• Shared across social media
• Added to a website or online newsroom
• Included in a newsletter
• Sent to residents, families and referral partners
• Used by the sales team in prospect follow-up
• Shared internally to recognize residents and team members

Unlike an ad that disappears when the campaign ends, a strong media placement can continue building awareness and credibility.

At The Ehlers Group, we don’t just help senior living communities earn media coverage. We help them make the most of it.

The holidays may feel far away, but the best seasonal stories take time to develop.

Before the decorations go up, identify the residents, traditions and community connections that could make your holiday coverage stand out.

Is a resident recreating a family recipe passed down for generations? Is your community continuing an unusual tradition? Are residents supporting a local cause in a meaningful way?

A full activities calendar tells you what is happening. Planning ahead helps you uncover the story within it.

A senior living community can invest in a beautiful website, polished marketing materials and carefully targeted advertising. But ultimately, its reputation is shaped by what people experience and what they tell others about that experience.

Families read reviews. They notice how concerns are answered. They compare what a community says about itself with what residents, families, team members and the media say about it.

That is why reputation management is not simply about responding when something goes wrong. It is the ongoing work of listening, communicating clearly, addressing concerns thoughtfully and making sure the stories people find accurately reflect the organization.

Reputation management is among the communications services offered by The Ehlers Group because in senior living, trust is not an added benefit. It is the foundation of every relationship.

Sometimes the best media stories are already happening inside a senior living community.

An ongoing balance class at our client's community became a timely opportunity to talk about fall prevention and healthy aging. The Ehlers Group connected the program to a broader issue affecting older adults and secured coverage on WGCU Public Media.

It’s a great example of how everyday community programming can become a meaningful media story when connected to the right conversation.

August 21 is National Senior Citizens Day, a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions older adults make to our families, communities, and society. This year's theme, "Flip the Script on Aging," encourages us to challenge outdated stereotypes and focus on the vitality, wisdom, and accomplishments of today's older adults. Intergenerational programs, lifelong learning opportunities, volunteer initiatives, and active lifestyles all help demonstrate what positive aging truly looks like. The Ehlers Group has helped communities earn media coverage and recognition for programs that showcase older adults in inspiring and meaningful ways.
Every resident has a story worth sharing—and we're passionate about helping communities tell those stories.

WPLG Local 10 also covered The Palace Suites’ recent Centenarian Celebration, giving viewers the opportunity to meet some of the remarkable residents who have lived a century and beyond.

For us, media relations is about more than getting our clients in the news. It’s about recognizing the people and stories that make a community special and finding opportunities to share them with a wider audience.

The celebration was the event. The residents were the story.

100+ years of life makes for quite a story.

The Palace Suites - Independent Living Residences recently celebrated its remarkable group of centenarians — residents whose lives span more than a century of history, including World War II veterans and wartime brides.

We knew there was a story here that extended far beyond a birthday celebration, and we're delighted to see CBS sharing it with the South Florida community.

Great senior living PR starts with recognizing the stories already living within a community — and helping them reach a larger audience.
