As a woman, I’m sickened that this is still the world we live in. We grow up being taught to watch our surroundings, never walk alone at night, share our location, hold our keys between our fingers, watch our drinks, trust our gut, and always have an exit plan. We’re taught all the ways to protect ourselves before we’re even old enough to understand why we need protecting.

Now, as a boy mom, I feel an entirely different kind of responsibility.

It’s my responsibility to raise a son who understands consent. Who respects women and their boundaries without question. Who knows that “no” is enough. Who never mistakes silence, pressure, intoxication, or fear for consent. Who speaks up when another man crosses a line instead of laughing along, looking away, or staying quiet.

I want to raise the kind of man women feel safe around.

The kind of man who walks a woman to her car. Who notices when someone is uncomfortable. Who calls out his friends. Who understands that being a protector of women doesn’t mean believing women are weak it means being an ally in a world where women have spent far too much time learning how to protect themselves.

I know I can’t control every choice my son will make someday. But I can control what I teach him, what I model for him, what I normalize in our home, and what I refuse to excuse simply because “boys will be boys.”

We spend so much time teaching our daughters how to stay safe.

As a boy mom, I’m going to spend just as much time teaching my son how to be someone women never have to feel unsafe around. 🤍
