REMEMBER WHEN WE BUILT A HOT AIR BALLOON?! 🎈

Okay… maybe we didn’t build a real one, but this one is pretty darn close! 😂

With the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic starting tomorrow, we thought it was the perfect time to throw it back to this larger-than-life project we created for CBH Homes at the Boise Airport!

From design and engineering to fabrication and installation, our team brought this hot air balloon to life—without ever leaving the ground.

The giant balloon was fabricated entirely from HDU (High-Density Urethane), giving us the perfect material to carve, shape, and transform into this eye-catching airport display.

Pretty cool way to make a project take flight! 🛫

Last Friday the Idaho Botanical Gardens celebrated the completion of Phase 1 of its Capital Campaign with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony!

We’re incredibly excited to see this project come to life and were honored to be there to celebrate such an exciting milestone with the Idaho Botanical Garden community.

How do you celebrate 100 years of Boise Airport history in a single sign? It all started with a deep dive into the archives.

As we worked alongside the Boise Arts & History team, we spent hours digging through historic photographs and archival materials from the airport's first 100 years. During that process, two elements immediately stood out: the original Boise Airport exterior signage and the beautifully designed architectural pillars that helped define the character of the early terminal.

Those historic details became the foundation for the design. We explored ways to blend the airport's rich history with a modern interpretation that would celebrate a century of aviation in Boise while feeling right at home in today's airport.

Once the early concepts were approved, it was time to shift from inspiration to ex*****on and start bringing the design to life.

Big projects start with small prototypes. 👀

We've got a large parametric slat wall coming down the pipeline, so our team built this 2' × 2' prototype to validate our approach before fabrication begins. This miniature version allowed us to test different slot tolerances, refine the joinery, and dial in the perfect fit.

So, how does a parametric slat wall come to life?

It all starts with a 3D CAD model. That model is then sliced into the thickness of the chosen material, where the joinery and mounting system are designed. Next, the cut files are sent to our CNC router, which precisely cuts each piece. From there, it's like assembling a giant 3D puzzle—slotting every component together until the flowing form begins to emerge.

✈️ Have you been through the Boise Airport lately?

If so, you've probably spotted the model airplane and retro-inspired hanging sign we had the privilege of designing, engineering, fabricating, and installing as part of the Boise Airport's 100th Anniversary celebration.

The installation pays tribute to a century of Boise aviation history, with historical banners suspended from the airplane's wings that invite travelers to learn about the airport's evolution over the past 100 years.

While this timelapse makes the installation look quick, countless hours of design, engineering, fabrication, and teamwork went into bringing these pieces to life. From researching the airport's history to assembling the full-scale airplane in our shop, this project challenged our team creatively and technically every step of the way.

The next time you're traveling through the airport, be sure to arrive a little early and take a moment to explore the exhibit.
