A busy couple of days here at the House of the Temple archives. While working on some material for an upcoming book, I found a series of pre-Revolutionary War issues of the Pennsylvania Packet and the General Advertiser. This Philadelphia newspaper was printed by John Dunlap, who later printed the first copies of the Declaration of Independence. The highlighted box in red shows a notice by John Mitchell, a local merchant who moved to Charleston after the war and became the first Sovereign Grand Commander of our Supreme Council. Little neat connection to history!

Today marks the 212th anniversary of the destruction of the first White House, US Capitol, and other federal buildings by British Forces during the War of 1812. The White House’s foundation survived the fire and James Hoban, the building’s first architect, returned to rebuild what was then referred to as the “Executive Mansion.” During the 1950s building renovations, President Harry S. Truman authorized the extraction of stones from the White House’s foundation that featured markings made by the building’s first workmen, some of whom were also Freemasons.

These stones were subsequently distributed to different American grand lodges and other national bodies as a public reminder of the building’s history.
