For September, the LGBTQIA+ book club read Dear Wendy by Ann Zhao. Unfortunately, the group wasn’t really feeling this one. While they loved reading something with ace/aro representation in general, folks pointed out issues with the definitions in some parts of the book and an overall lack of nuance. They also thought the story could’ve been flushed out better in general, with some members not liking the plot at all. While this book falls into the ‘new adult’ genre, some mentioned it felt immature, even younger than a typical YA book. There were even some factually inaccurate statements, like describing Puerto Ricans as immigrants to the United States. Overall the group was unimpressed with this read, giving it only 2.5 stars. But if you’re looking for books with better ace/aro representation, check out the TCC library!
