Today, the members of the Boston Fire Department and everyone here at the Boston Fire Cancer Foundation are mourning the loss of Boston Firefighter Robert “Bobby”Kilduff Jr.

These posts are never easy to write because this job is more than a profession — it’s a family. Every loss feels personal. Above all it is a reminder of just how deep the bond in the fire service truly is.

Robert dedicated his life to serving the city of Boston and standing beside his brothers and sisters on the department. Today, we stand beside his family and everyone grieving this unimaginable loss.

Please keep the Kilduff family and the members of the Boston Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Boston Firefighters are in a fight for our lives against occupational cancer. On behalf of Local 718, we thank those who recognize the severity of the situation and the importance of protecting those who risk their lives to protect others.

Today we had the honor of standing beside Mayor Michelle Wu, Dr. Ebert from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Dr. O’Donnell, Union President Sam Dillon, Commissioner Marshall, IAFF President Edzo Kelly as well as many city council members as we addressed a problem that never should have existed in the first place: no funding for firefighter cancer screenings.

When the issue was identified, this team didn’t just offer words — they took action. Once again, Dana-Farber showed up for Boston firefighters and stepped forward to fund critical, life-saving early detection cancer screenings for members of the Boston Fire Department.

Cancer continues to impact the fire service at alarming rates. Early detection saves lives, and today was proof of what can happen when leaders, the fire department, and the medical community come together with a shared commitment to protecting firefighters and their families.

Grateful to stand with people who chose action over excuses and made the health and lives of firefighters a priority.

This matters.

Lives will be saved because of it.

Council Blocks Emergency Hearing on Firefighter Cancer Screening Funding

My filing to expedite a hearing on restoring funding for firefighter cancer screenings, health screenings, mental health supports, and wellness services was blocked today.

This is outrageous.

Councilor Durkan has repeatedly blocked urgent filings in recent weeks, and today she decided that cancer screenings for Boston firefighters did not rise to the level of an emergency.

Firefighters have a life expectancy of approximately five years after retirement. These screenings save lives, and the funding was lost because a federal grant was not renewed.

I am asking the Mayor to use $1.2 million from the City’s nearly $1.8 billion rainy day fund to protect these critical services.

We cannot play politics with firefighters’ lives.
