Anyone else just completely obsessed with their dog? 🥹❤️

I have 3 dogs (well, 4 if we count the crazy foster who may never leave 😂), and I love them all more than anything… but my boy Kona is the true definition of a soul dog.

I look at him and my heart somehow explodes and melts at the same time. He is just my boy. The thought of someday walking through life with only memories of the joy he brings to every single day honestly breaks my heart.

I know I can’t be the only one who has a dog like this.

Courage is contagious. And I swear Frank’s bravery, toughness and little spirit have been pulling this very nervous team through the storm.

Frank is HOME. He came home late last night, and I cannot say enough about his fosters, Amy and Don. They have been there through the sleepless nights, the scary updates, the constant watching, the back and forth, the worrying, all of it. They love this little guy so much and we are beyond grateful that he gets to recover with them.

I also have to thank our team because this has been a lot. We are tiny. Like, really tiny. And everyone has been checking in, helping make decisions, talking through options, supporting each other and trying to figure out what the next right thing is. And a huge thank you to Granite VETS for helping us through something that felt very overwhelming. They were kind, they explained things, they coached us through our options and they were understanding when we had to say something that honestly killed me to admit: we simply did not have the money to do everything that was being recommended all at once.

For anyone just tuning in, Frank had a stone blocking his urethra. At the first visit they could not get a catheter in, so he was sent to the ER. Eventually they were able to get things flushed and move the stone back into his bladder, but it still had to come out. 𝐘𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 $𝟕,𝟎𝟎𝟎.

The hard part is that removing the stone only treated the problem we could see. It did not tell us why a puppy this young formed a stone in the first place. Because of his age, and because he was reportedly the runt of his litter, one of the concerns the vets have is a possible liver shunt. When we got that initial diagnosis, the plan they were talking about was removing the stone, doing special imaging to look for a shunt and see exactly where it is, and then, if one is found, potentially doing a much bigger abdominal surgery to repair it. The high end estimate for all of that was around $15,000.

We did not have that.

That was probably the hardest part of this whole thing for me. I never want to make a medical decision because of money. I never want to have to choose between the symptom and the cause. But in that moment, we had to deal with the emergency in front of us, get the stone out, get Frank comfortable, and then make a plan for the rest instead of pretending we had funds that we simply did not have.

Maybe we get lucky. Maybe the stone analysis gives us great news and this goes in a totally different direction. Maybe he just needs a special diet and monitoring and this becomes one really scary chapter in a long, happy life. I would love nothing more than for that to be the story.

But we also have to be realistic and prepare for the other possibility.

So we are working. We are planning. We are trying to raise the money. We are learning as we go. These two little ones have already been through so much.

Frank and Abigail both came to us from Mississippi after a long journey north for one simple reason: to have a chance. A chance to be safe. A chance to be healthy. A chance to know what it feels like to be loved, and eventually, to find families of their own.

And they have been loved every step of the way. By the people who helped save them in the South, by the people who transported them, by our team, and especially by their incredible foster families who have watched over them so closely.

This week has just been a really hard one.

Frank was struggling to use the bathroom, and his foster knew something wasn’t right. She got him to the vet quickly, and he was transferred to an emergency hospital, where he has been admitted while the medical team works to determine exactly what is going on and whether surgery will be needed. He has a catheter in and is being kept comfortable.

Abigail has also needed emergency care after coming to us passing rocks and gravel. Both she and Frank have been dealing with kennel cough, and when Abigail’s cough worsened, we brought her in for chest imaging because we were worried about pneumonia. That imaging is actually what revealed just how many rocks and stones she had ingested — approximately 15. Thankfully, Abigail has been passing those stones like an absolute rockstar, and we are so relieved every time another one makes its way out.

Between Frank and Abigail, their emergency and follow-up care has already cost over $5,000, and that number could continue to rise depending on what Frank needs next.

Our priority is their health. We want Frank and Abigail to get through this, feel good again, and continue on to the part of their story where they get to find their forever families. We cannot thank their foster heroes enough for the love, diligence, worrying, vet trips, and very real loss of sleep that comes with caring for them through moments like this. They have been loved fiercely since the day they were rescued.

The hard part is that emergency medical care at this level can drain a small rescue’s funds incredibly quickly. And when that happens, it can make it harder for us to say yes to the next dog waiting in Mississippi who needs that same chance.
