I asked ChatGPT a question about the “AI apocalypse.”

I wasn't expecting the conversation that followed.

We talked about what humanity should protect as artificial intelligence becomes more powerful—not only our survival, but our flourishing. Human rights. Equity. Dignity. Relationship. Truth. Childhood. The living Earth. The distribution of power. And the parts of being human that perhaps should never be optimized away.

Eventually, I asked: “Are you human?” The answer stopped me.

I decided to share our conversation largely as it unfolded, not because I think AI should tell humanity how to live, but because sometimes a mirror allows us to see ourselves differently.

At this extraordinary threshold, perhaps the most important question isn't simply what AI will become. It is who we will choose to become alongside it.

❤️ Hugs and hope for a better world.

A dear colleague once shared a simple piece of wisdom with me:

There is a difference between being nice and being kind.

I have spent a great deal of time sitting with that distinction.

Niceness can be pleasant and polite—but it may also allow us to avoid discomfort while still seeing ourselves as caring people.

Kindness asks something more of us.

Kindness moves toward another person. It listens, risks inconvenience, tells difficult truths with compassion, and protects dignity even when doing so comes at a cost.

This matters in our relationships, in healthcare, and in society at large. We can be perfectly nice while leaving people unseen, unheard, or alone. We can preserve the appearance of harmony without addressing the suffering beneath it.

My latest Musing explores what separates performing care from practicing it—and how kindness calls us into relational stewardship, shared responsibility, and the heart of our common humanity.

“Niceness preserves the appearance of care. Kindness accepts the responsibility of caring—even when it asks something of us.”

𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁

There's been a great deal of conversation lately about the "tradwife" movement.

What strikes me isn't whether women choose careers, motherhood, homemaking, leadership, or some beautiful combination of them.

It's something deeper.

The generations before us didn't fight so that every woman would choose the same life.

They fought so that women could choose.

That distinction matters.

I celebrate women who find profound meaning in caring for a home and raising children. I celebrate women who build businesses, lead organizations, pursue scholarship, or decide motherhood isn't their path.

None of these choices diminishes the others.

What concerns me is whenever any movement—traditional or progressive—begins suggesting there is only one worthy way to be a woman.

One woman's choice should never restrict another woman's choice.

Freedom isn't about arriving at the same destination.

It's about protecting the conditions that allow each of us to choose our own path with dignity, wisdom, and agency.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

A movie surprised me this week.

I thought I was watching another Robin Hood story.

Instead, I found myself reflecting on grief, complexity, and the quiet work of discernment.

This essay is about the difference between understanding an idea and allowing it to become the way we live.

If you've been wrestling with complexity lately, perhaps this reflection will resonate with you.

Gratitude for the dream and vision of a nation built on liberty, justice, and the radical belief that power ultimately belongs to the people.

Responsibility because democracy is not something we inherit once and for all. It is something we practice. Something we protect. Something we must preserve and defend.

We have faltered throughout our history—sidetracked by colonialism, racism, greed, and the painful ways we have failed to live into our own highest ideals. There is nothing perfect about this union. And still, the dream matters. The vision matters. The Constitution matters.

We cannot keep our heads in the sand when democratic principles are threatened. Love of country requires the courage to defend freedom, uphold the Constitution, resist authoritarian efforts, and recommit ourselves to the unfinished work of liberty and justice for all.

Just as healing requires tending, so does freedom.

May we celebrate this Independence Day with joy, humility, and steadfast commitment.

We often think trauma begins with an act of violence.

Sometimes it begins with something far quieter.

A policy.

A protocol.

A culture that slowly stops asking whether harm has become ordinary.

The recent Senate investigation into the medical treatment of women detained in ICE custody has left me thinking about something much larger than one institution.

It has left me asking: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮?

This week's essay explores structural trauma—not as a political conversation, but as a profoundly human one.

Because trauma-informed care isn't simply about being kinder. It's about creating cultures where dignity cannot quietly disappear.

I'd love to know what resonates with you.
