KVA’s Honnen Arts Hub recently recieved a Design Award for Built Work at the BSA Awards Gala in March, a Design Award at the 20th Annual Honors and Awards Luncheon in New York City, and a Jury’s Choice Award for Adaptive Reuse to be awarded at the SCUP 2026 Annual Conference in Minneapolis, June 19-21. The Honnen Arts Hub adaptively re-uses an abandoned 1970’s modern-era Hockey Arena - originally open air and enclosed in 1985 - to create an interdisciplinary center for design innovation and fabrication for Colorado College. As an existing high bay, thin shelled long span structure with a clear span of 80 feet, the building dramatically reduces waste, carbon emissions, and resource consumption compared to new construction. It conserves the embodied energy within the existing structure, avoids the environmental impact of demolition, and promotes innovative ways to reimagine lighting and alternative forms of heating and cooling. The project incorporates a displacement air system that works by delivering fresh air at a low velocity at the floor and is forced down by warmer stratified air. During months where outside temperatures are well above comfort levels, fans are introduced at either end of the building for night-time flushing bringing in cool air typical of alpine desert climates. The natural umbrella-like vaults act as reflectors for both natural and artificial light, reducing lighting needs by 30%.

KVA’s Springfield Convention Center Carpark and Civic Plaza will receive the International Parking & Mobility Institute’s 2026 Award for Architectural Design Excellence at the IPMI Conference in Milwaukee, WI, on June 16. The Carpark and Civic Plaza revitalize downtown Springfield’s Central Cultural District by converging multiple public programs and activities including a space for outdoor events, markets, and music performances; retail for shops and restaurants; a 24/7 lightwell/gallery within the CarPark for upcoming public arts programs; and an 800 car garage, with a capacity for 20% dedicated to EV vehicles and 480kw in renewable photovoltaics. 1,157 rotated panels reflect Springfield’s foundational role in the American System - the use of interchangeable parts across manufacturing which catalyzed the Industrial Revolution - and the nearby Connecticut River.

KVA’s Tozzer Anthropology Building at Harvard University is one of four finalists for the 2025 Harleston Parker Award, an annual award founded in 1921 for the “Most Beautiful Building in Boston”. The contemporary use of brick and copper inspired by the site's historic neighbors and the conservation of energy and carbon by reusing an existing foundation and structure are both attributes that make this building beautiful. It's also certified LEED Gold!
