Have you heard the rumor that Julia’s ashes were buried in a reef off the coast of Florida? That is internet lore and simply untrue. According to Julia’s family, members of which are Foundation Trustees, following her passing in 2004, Julia’s ashes were spread in a few of her favorite places, including California, France and New England. For more facts about Julia’s life and career, visit the Foundation’s Julia Timeline on our website via the link in the comments.

Happy Labor Day! Today we honor American workers and the Foundation would like to give special recognition to those who work in the kitchen and in the fields. Summer isn’t over quite yet, but as we say goodbye to warm weather, we’re sharing a photo of Julia and Paul enjoying some fresh air in Maine in 1951. On behalf of this year’s Julia Child Award recipient, Sam Kass, the Foundation is proud to award a grant to the Urban Growers Collective (UGC), a Black- and women-led non-profit farm working to build a more just and equitable local food system in Sam’s hometown of Chicago. Using urban agriculture as their tool and method to create new pathways for economic stability and abundance and to produce community and cultural impacts, UGC aims to address the historic inequities and structural barriers that exist in the food system predominately in low-income communities of color. They operate 11 acres across eight urban farms and a 30-acre peri-urban site, producing more than 33,000 pounds of fresh produce annually. UGC’s holistic approach also goes beyond farming to address structural inequities through trauma-informed job training, STEAM-based youth programming and innovative distribution models like the Fresh Moves Mobile Market. By cultivating nourishing environments that support health, healing and economic abundance, UGC is pioneering a more just and resilient future for tens of thousands of Chicagoans. Today marks what would have been Julia and Paul’s 80th wedding anniversary. Here they are at their reception, which took place at Paul’s brother and sister-in-law’s home in Lumberville, Pennsylvania. You may notice a bandage on Julia’s head. They were in a car accident the day before—Paul had to use a cane. Eager to wed and not easily deterred, Julia and Paul soldiered on and enjoyed their wedding day. (Photo: Schlesinger Library, used with permission)

60 Years of Storytelling | A Taste of Hawaiʻi with Julia Child & Titus Chan 08/21/2026

We recently stumbled upon “A Taste of Hawai‘i with Julia Child & Titus Chan,” which aired on Pau Hana Years in the mid 1970s. A show spotlighting Hawai‘i’s older generation, Pau Hana Years aired on KHET-TV, now PBS Hawaiʻi, for 16 years, from 1966 until 1982. While Julia doesn’t cook on the special, Chef Titus Chan—host of The Chan-ese Way, a 13-part PBS series from the early 1970s—prepares Kumu fish in sweet and sour sauce. Julia, in Hawai’i for the first time, shares that she loves Chinese cuisine, which she discovered when she was living and working in Kunming while serving in the OSS during World War II.
