In some older cemeteries in the northern US and Canada, you will find receiving vaults which were used to shelter interments during the winter. Before backhoes and modern embalming techniques were invented, when someone died in the harshest winter months the ground was literally frozen solid and there was no way to bury the caskets. The vaults were designed to keep the ambient temperature inside near freezing to prevent decay while avoiding damage from the elements. After the spring thaw, burials could take place. The earliest burials in this cemetery date from 1810.
