Beginning with students entering in the 2026–2027 academic year, Boston University has launched the BU Promise, a new financial aid initiative that eliminates loans from need-based packages, guarantees institutional scholarships will keep pace with tuition increases, and—for many students—covers the full cost of tuition.

Under the BU Promise, admitted domestic first-year, first-time students from families earning less than $200,000 annually, with typical assets, can expect financial aid to cover full tuition—roughly two-thirds of BU’s total cost of attendance—plus a portion of housing and dining costs, with a parent contribution capped at $20,000 per year. Families with household incomes of $75,000 or less, with typical assets, can expect to pay nothing.

Boston University's Russian in Boston course allows students to strengthen their language skills by connecting with members of Boston's Russophone community. Through a partnership with Hebrew SeniorLife, students practiced conversational Russian while learning firsthand about immigration, culture, and the experiences of older adults from across the former Soviet Union—building meaningful relationships that extended far beyond the classroom.

A sound-shield technology developed by BU engineers has been named a 2026 "World Changing Idea" by Fast Company. 💨

Designed to reduce noise while allowing air to flow freely, the innovation has the potential to make technologies like air conditioners, airplanes, and data centers significantly quieter. Created in the lab of College of Engineering professor Xin Zhang, the technology could help build healthier, more sustainable environments without sacrificing energy efficiency or performance.

On a rainy day in August, Boston University School of Medicine celebrated its latest class during the traditional White Coat Ceremony, where students pledged to their future professions as doctors.

Through a summer internship at the Boston Athenaeum, Boston University PhD candidate MaryKate Smolenski (GRS’27) helped uncover overlooked perspectives from the Revolutionary War, developing lesson plans and resources that highlight the experiences of Black Bostonians, women, Indigenous communities, and loyalists. By bringing these stories into K–12 classrooms, Smolenski hopes to encourage a more nuanced understanding of the American Revolution and the many voices that shaped it.

Through an internship with Boston University’s Initiative on Cities and the City of Boston’s Equity and Inclusion Cabinet, Briannya Evans (Pardee’27) spent the summer researching racial equity policy, supporting community initiatives, and helping organize Juneteenth events. The hands-on experience gave Evans a new perspective on local government and reinforced her passion for using public policy to create meaningful change in the communities she serves.

MBTA Green Line service on the B branch, which runs through Boston University’s Charles River Campus, will be suspended twice in August as crews complete infrastructure upgrades and accessibility improvements. 🚋

A $31.5 million funding renewal from the National Institute on Aging will allow Boston University's Framingham Heart Study Brain Aging Program to continue advancing research on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Building on decades of data from thousands of participants, researchers will investigate the early indicators of cognitive decline, expand access to critical datasets, and support new studies focused on prevention, genetics, and healthy brain aging.
