This summer, three Emmanuel students stepped outside the classroom and into communities of faith — thanks to a new grant that supports exploring vocation and purpose.

Ana Victoria Acedo del Olmo Martinez '28 (left) worked with the Grace Church Community in Roxbury and helped rehab rural homes in Maine.

Poula Fahmy '28 (center) explored a faith different from his own at ISKCON-Boston and helped organize a temple festival.

Angelina Bellizzi '28 (right) served the homeless community with the The Cathedral Church of St Paul, Boston.

It was all thanks to a NetVUE (Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education) Grant for Fostering Leadership for Communities of Faith. Awarded by the Council of Independent Colleges, the funding helps students explore their vocation beyond the classroom.

This fall, the grant will also fund a series of interfaith dinners — starting Oct. 1 at Grace Community Church — where students share what they learned and lead conversations on faith, vocation, and public life.

Dr. Claudia Bejarano Zambrano didn't set out for a career in public health — she arrived there by asking questions.

This week, Dr. Zambrano, now a physician, lawyer, and global health researcher, joined the Emmanuel community as a guest speaker for the Global & Public Health Program. She traced her path back to high school, when she worked with a community education program serving underserved communities.

"I started asking questions about the disparities between the community I was living in and the community I was working in," she said. "Not just about education, but about health, access to water, to everything."

That early curiosity has shaped a career dedicated to closing those gaps.

For alumni like Stephen Winkler ’12, a career fueled by curiosity and thinking outside-the-box begins in the classroom.

As an Innovation Officer at the World Bank, finding solutions to help support community and economic development is in Winkler’s job description, and each day he taps into the habits he built as an undergraduate to uncover the most impactful one.

“[It's] a continuous cycle of curiosity to turn critical-thinking into problem solving,” he said.

That’s the thought process that Emmanuel alumni Stephen Winkler ’12 has taken with him throughout his career, visiting rural communities all over the world from Myanmar (above) to Nairobi, Sierra Leone, and beyond.

No matter where his work takes him, he taps into that mindset that he developed as an undergraduate at Emmanuel College in the political science department to make an impact.

“The discussions in those courses just blew my mind,” he said. “They created this endless curiosity in us.”

Students from five campuses filled our quad Friday night for the Colleges of the Fenway Block Party — food, music, games, and the kind of energy you only get when a whole neighborhood of colleges shows up together 🎉

In addition to bringing people together, the event highlighted the many opportunities available through the Colleges of the Fenway consortium, from joint student activities to cross-registering for classes. Friday night was just a taste of what that connection makes possible. 🏙️✨

Members of the Emmanuel community gathered today to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
As has become Emmanuel tradition, nearly 3,000 miniature flags were placed on the lawn near Saint Ann Hall; one for each life lost that day.
“Twenty-five years later, we still feel the impact of that tragedy,” said Vice President of Mission & Ministry Fr. Federico Cinocca. “We remember the families who lost loved ones, those who carry physical and emotional wounds, and all who continue to work for peace, justice, and reconciliation in our world.”

International Studies major Juan Torres ’28 spent his summer researching Crete's freshwater politics, an experience made possible by a Gilman Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State.

Juan traveled through Morocco, Rome, Athens, and Crete before interning with the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute, speaking with farmers and local politicians about how 20 years of tourism growth have impacted Crete's agriculture.

"I think it's extremely important to see other parts of the world," Juan says. "It will only add to your depth as a human being."

The Emmanuel community came together in prayer and song this week at the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit.

A tradition at Catholic colleges since the 16th century, the Mass seeks an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the full breadth of the community’s endeavors throughout the new academic year.

“In this sense, we recognize—we celebrate—that we are a link in a luminous chain of thinkers, artists, researchers, and scholars committed to the pursuit of truth in the Catholic intellectual tradition,” said Emmanuel President Beth Ross. “A chain of searchers who understand the connections between reason and faith, learning and service, knowledge and the deepest desires of the human heart. And a chain of believers alive to the possibility of transcendence in our everyday encounters and endeavors.”
