I write a lot about songwriting over at Speed Songwriting, and this one keeps coming up with writers who feel like their lyrics fall flat.

The fix is one word: specific.

"Heartbroken" is vague. "Sitting on her doorstep, fingers tracing the goodbye letter she left" is a scene you can't unsee.

Two psychology-backed moves make emotion land: sensory detail, and push-pull tension between your verse and chorus. Get those right, and people feel your song, not just follow it.

Nobody feels a lyric because you told them it's "sad."

They feel it because they can see it.

Write "I was happy," and the listener feels nothing. Write "I walked around with a goofy grin, my heart drumming like a bass line." Now it lands in the body.

That's the psychology of emotional songwriting: specificity beats intensity.

Two levers do the heavy lifting:

1. Sensory detail: turn abstract feelings into scenes you can see and feel.
2. Push-pull dynamics: build tension in the verse, release it in the chorus. Your brain craves resolution, so it stays hooked until the payoff hits.

Stop telling people your song is sad. Show them the doorstep, the rain, the goodbye letter.
