This is the Dolly I grew up with in the 70s and 80s. She was larger than life to me.

I am grieving today, just like the rest of you. There are few things that Americans can currently agree on. But our undying love for Dolly and our grief at her loss is one.

I grew up on a steady stream of Dolly (and John Denver!) coming from Colorado. 9 to 5 was a pop culture moment of my generation. I remember learning her story - and the story of her Coat of Many Colors - at a very young age and being inspired by her then.

My first real newspaper review as a singer likened my voice to a “young Dolly Parton” and I thought that was the best compliment I could ever receive.

As an adult, I looked to her as a constant source of inspiration. Her need to do good in the world. Her acceptance of all people. Her attitude. Her impecable work ethic. Her savvy entrepreneurial skills.

Her passion of reading and education for all.
Her pro-community and pro-vaccine stance during the COVID pandemic.
Her constant unselfishness.
She spent her life looking out for others.

For reasons too long to go into on social media, when I find myself in a difficult place, I ask myself what Dolly would do. How would she react? What would she say? She’s never steered me wrong.

I am eternally and deeply grateful that I got to live on this planet at the same time as Dolly Parton. She changed the path of my life. ❤️
