Kroger delivered modest Q1 growth — but new CEO Greg Foran says the real work is just beginning. 📊

The retailer reported $46.1 billion in sales for the quarter ended May 23, with identical sales (excluding fuel) up 1% and adjusted EPS rising to $1.58. Ecommerce sales jumped 19% and Kroger Precision Marketing profit climbed more than 20%, even as gross margin slipped to 22.7% amid transportation costs, price investments and egg deflation.

On his first earnings call since taking the helm, Foran struck an urgent tone, warning that operating costs are rising faster than sales and calling the trend “not sustainable.” After visiting more than 100 stores, he pointed to ex*****on gaps and shifting consumer behavior — including more selective, promotion-driven trips — as areas needing attention.

Protein bars are moving into the grocery aisle — and Walmart’s reset with ALOHA signals a broader category shift. 🛒📦

Beginning this month, ALOHA’s plant-based protein bars will transition from the nutrition set into Walmart’s main grocery aisles in roughly 2,000 stores nationwide. The move reflects changing shopper behavior, as protein and fiber become everyday food attributes rather than sports nutrition add-ons — expanding ALOHA’s competitive set to include yogurt, nuts and other center-store snacks.

Nosh spoke with ALOHA’s sales and marketing leaders about what drove the collaborative decision, how success will be measured and why protein bars may be evolving into a grocery staple — not a specialty item. 📊🥜

Speed is becoming the defining battleground in grocery retail. 🛒⚡

Online grocery captured more than 19% of total grocery spending in Q1, holding a nearly 20% lift over the past six quarters, according to Brick Meets Click — even as food prices rose 3.1% year over year. Nearly 80% of delivery orders were same-day, with ultra-fast fulfillment (one hour or less) gaining ground as Amazon and Walmart double down on sub-same-day infrastructure. Walmart is now approaching 40% of total U.S. eGrocery sales.

With AI-powered tools from Gopuff and Walmart accelerating the digital shopping experience, traditional and regional grocers face mounting pressure to compete on speed while protecting margins.

🥣 The protein wars in yogurt are heading to federal court.

Danone has filed a lawsuit against Chobani, alleging its “20G Protein” yogurt tubs mislead consumers by inflating serving sizes to meet the 20-gram claim. The complaint argues that under FDA serving-size rules, the products would contain 18 grams of protein — not 20 — and claims Chobani’s calculations overstate protein content by roughly 12.5%.

At stake is intensifying competition between Danone’s Oikos Pro and Chobani’s high-protein line, as demand for protein-packed dairy continues to surge. Danone is seeking damages, corrective advertising and a court order blocking certain marketing claims, escalating an increasingly public rivalry between the category’s top players ⚖️📊

How could this dispute reshape protein labeling — and the broader yogurt aisle?
