One of the most fascinating things about Andy Warhol wasn't only what he created: it was what he collected.
In 1977, Warhol surprised many by sharing his private collections with the public for the first time in an exhibition at the Museum of American Folk Art. What few people knew until after his death was that his East 66th Street home housed an extraordinary collection of American Federal and Empire furniture, from a nineteenth-century ship's figurehead and this very desk sat in Warhol's bedroom.
Very few visitors were ever invited inside Warhol's home, making these treasures one of the Americana world's best-kept secrets.

The History of America, Told Through Objects
Bonhams' June Americana sales span nearly three centuries of American history through objects that embody the nation's past.
Emanuel Leutze's Columbus' First Landing in America (1863) is a tour de force of 19th-century history painting by the artist best known for Washington Crossing the Delaware, reemerging at the precise moment the United States commemorates 250 years of independence. Felix de Weldon's original Iwo Jima Monument, sculpted in Washington D.C. in 1945, standing 20 feet tall and long thought lost before its rediscovery, is a defining symbol of wartime bravery and national unity.
Further highlights include a portrait by Joshua Johnson, one of the earliest known Black professional painters in the United States, offering a rare and human view of the young republic; a Revolutionary War sword purchased personally by the Marquis de Lafayette and carried aboard the frigate Hermione to American shores; and a 19th-century ship figurehead from continental Europe, later acquired by Andy Warhol.

From the first stirrings of a nation to the defining symbols of American identity. American Stories: Celebrating 250 Years of Independence brings together objects that trace the remarkable arc of American History.
A 1676 charter issued by Charles II, one of the earliest documents of colonial governance, sits alongside George Washington's 1782 Niderviller porcelain, gifted during the Revolutionary War and described by Washington himself as being of "inestimable value", Ronald Reagan’s baseball cap and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s silk top hat.
Discover work by Joshua Johnson, among the earliest known Black professional painters in the United States, offering a rare and intimate record of a young republic, alongside Felix de Weldon's original Iwo Jima monument, long thought lost and now rediscovered, returning to public view as the nation marks 250 years of independence.

A collection of remarkable decorative fans painted by Impressionist masters Paul Gauguin, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre Bonnard emerge from an esteemed private collection.
In the late nineteenth century, the fan evolved from an everyday object into an important artistic medium, embraced by Impressionist artists eager to experiment with composition, scale, and depictions of modern life. Delicately balanced and richly detailed, these intimate works capture the pastoral scenes and luminous landscapes that came to define Impressionism, reimagined through a unique and unexpected format.
Presented alongside works by Auguste Rodin and Oskar Kokoschka, the collection reflects a deeply cultivated appreciation for both the fine and decorative arts.
