This past weekend, volunteers helped spruce up three important memorials honoring the Underground Railroad, abolitionists like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, and emancipation here in Boston!

Tubman’s connection with Boston spanned much of her life! She was an invaluable contributor to the abolitionist and women’s rights movements, in Boston and elsewhere, and played an essential role in making Boston a focal point of these movements!

🚲🎒Bikes and Backpacks Galore! 🚲🎒 G4G teamed up with Mattapan Cultural Arts and Bikes Not Bombs to get kiddos ready for school at the “Labor of Love” community giveaway! Bikes were repaired and donated, backpacks and fresh produce were distributed, and dances and laughs were shared! Happy Back to School to all our local BPS kids and families! 📚✏️🚸

our volunteers returned to Prison Book Program this past weekend to help sort, invoice, and package free books to go to incarcerated folks across the country! 📚📝📦♥️

today we are taking a moment to shout another of our AWESOME chapter leader Kaan (he/they) on his fifth anniversary with Gay For Good Boston 🌈♥️✨ Kaan joined G4G in August 2021!

What was your first project with G4G (and when) and how did you hear about/get involved with G4G?

My very first project with G4G was at the National Braille Press in December 2021, where we helped assemble children’s books in Braille. I was new to the city and remember Googling q***r volunteer opportunities, and G4G came up. I decided to give it a try, and I’ve been involved ever since!

What type of service project or service area appeals to you?

I love projects that involve assembly lines or anything where I can still have conversations with other volunteers. I really enjoy socializing and getting to know people while volunteering. I also don’t have a car and depend on public transportation, so I prefer projects in the Greater Boston area since I live in the city.

What are some favorite projects or memorable moments?

It’s really hard to choose, but FriendshipWorks’ Annual Elderbration & Walk to End Elder Isolation is special to me. I’ve participated every year since 2022, and cheering on the elders and seeing how happy it makes them brings me so much joy. I lost my grandparents at a young age, so I always think of them when I’m there. Elder isolation is an issue that really touches me emotionally, which makes this project particularly meaningful.

How did you become a chapter leader with Gay For Good?

I volunteered almost every week for a year or two when I was still new to the city. Eventually, I told the other chapter leaders that I wanted to take on a more active role and help the team by taking on more responsibilities. I’m grateful they gave me the opportunity to become more involved and contribute in a bigger way.

Tell us a little about yourself. What do you do for work?

I work for the Boston Red Sox in the People & Culture Department. I oversee our Employee Resource Groups and coordinate our Mentorship Program and on-field employee recognition for our Cultural & Identity Celebrations.
