In a witty 1965 letter to longtime friend and fellow Liverpool art-school student Jonathan Hague, Lennon congratulates him on becoming “A FAMOUS PAINTER,” explains his own signature — then sketches Christ on the cross: “This is guess who?”

Most Raoul Wallenberg Schutz-Passes were signed with a squiggle like “R.”
Not this one: the full “R. Wallenberg.”

Issued in Budapest on Aug. 15, 1944, the ultra-early Schutz-Pass No. 0005 was issued to Dr. Ladislaus Vámbéri as Wallenberg worked to protect Hungarian Jews from deportation.

William Barret Travis was fighting Texas battles before the Alamo. This one involved more paperwork.

In 1834, the 24-year-old lawyer signed this four-page petition in a dispute over Anglo-American colonization in Texas.
Two years later, Travis would die commanding the defenders of the Alamo.

Abraham Lincoln’s famous 1864 “Penny Profile,” signed by Lincoln, is up for auction at RR Auction.

Photographed by Anthony Berger at Mathew Brady’s Washington studio, the portrait later served as a principal photographic source for Victor David Brenner’s design of the Lincoln cent.

Before there was an International Olympic Committee, there was a blueprint.

Pierre de Coubertin’s four-page handwritten plan to revive the Olympic Games dates to Jan. 30, 1894—nearly five months before the committee was founded.
