was started in 1973 by 15 families who wanted more for their kids that what they were getting from the basic Northshore School District curriculum. It started as the Northshore Alternative Program (NAP) with one K - 3 classroom at Lockwood Elementary School. The program steadily expanded, with more and more families wanting an enriched curriculum for their kids, until 1999 when it was located at f
our elementary schools and was comprised of 15-1/2 classrooms. Although Kindergarten was eliminated from the program in 2001 it is still a grade 1 - 5 program with 15 classrooms at Lockwood, Woodmoor and Wellington Elementary School’s. is a choice program offered through the Northshore School District for grades 1-5 on a space-available basis. It is an educational community of teachers, parents, and students actively working with an enriched curriculum that is built on the Northshore School District curriculum and enriched by parent and student participation. The kids are provided with an education that will enrich and deepen learning, independence, and leadership while respect, compassion, and responsibility are valued as the kids become a community of lifelong learners. At Lockwood, PACE has a visible presence of volunteers actively supporting both program and the larger school community through library, traffic, breakfast and other school wide programs. Enrichments within the PACE program have also enhanced the neighborhood school. For example, a grant sought out by a PACE class for international kite making was expanded to include the entire school. Many PACE families play significant roles in Lockwood's PTA and it's activities. Students throughout Lockwood have opportunities to blend with other classes at their grade level. All teachers meet the same curriculum requirements the district requires, whether they teach PACE classes or neighborhood classes. The PACE teachers work cooperatively with parent volunteers using a time tested structure and traditions.
