Human Workplace
I'm Liz Ryan. I write about work, careers, power and being human. I want you to know how much power you have — at work and everywhere else. Come on in.
We coach and empower working people and job seekers, leaders & entrepreneurs to get the jobs and have the careers they deserve.
A very good explanation from Ally Henny
The iced coffee incident has unleashed a flood of tiny, subjective “preferences”
(a/k/a biases) interviewers use in making hiring decisions.
THIS SHOULD CONCERN US

How to avoid sexual assault
Folks on here admit they’ll reject you
if you bring iced coffee to an interview.
Imagine the biases they DON’T admit!

Let’s buckle down, people

I don’t know how hard it might be to tell a guy not to denigrate and insult women in a conversation where a bunch of guys are standing around talking about women, but however hard it is, you have to do it or it’s all men.
It’s all men until there are as many men as women on these comment threads calling out the horrific way women are treated on college campuses and everywhere.
It’s all men until it’s men rather than women who push back when guys tried to defend the status quo.
It’s all men until men recognize that although men have been taught to cast themselves as protectors, men are actually the people women need protection against.

The “No iced coffee at an interview” rule was just one recruiter’s pet peeve - but now it has spread so far and wide that people are asking, is this a real rule?
It’s astounding (and outrageous) how individual recruiters and hiring managers feel their personal preferences are acceptable reasons for rejecting a perfectly qualified candidate.

As we get stronger day by day and grow our power, we realize that a lot of the old rules we were taught don’t apply anymore.
If you want to give two weeks notice when you leave your job and it’s safe to do so – meaning that you will not get walked out by security and lose two weeks pay – by all means do it.
But if you don’t want to give two weeks notice, don’t let anyone guilt you into it.
And don’t stay for two weeks longer than you want to because you think you would be letting your coworkers down if you left.
If they care about you, they don’t want you to stay in an environment you want to get out of.
Maybe your departure will inspire someone else to move on.
Keep growing your flame!
