Millhaus derives its name from the historic Cherry Mill property on which it stands and the Passive House (“Haus”) principles that guided its design. Inspired by the agricultural heritage of Colorado’s foothills and plains, the home reinterprets the form of a traditional mill through three asymmetrical gable volumes connected by flat-roofed elements supported by exposed steel. Natural materials, including Cradle-to-Cradle certified bark siding, reinforce its connection to place while creating a contemporary expression of regional modernism.

From the outset, Passive House principles were integral to the design process. Through iterative modeling and careful refinement of orientation, massing, glazing, and shading, the project sought to demonstrate that rigorous building performance and high-quality architecture can strengthen one another rather than compete.

To gain firsthand Passive House construction experience, the architect/homeowner served as general contractor and primary builder for much of the project. The home is powered entirely by renewable energy, utilizing a geothermal heat pump, photovoltaic array, and battery storage system.

Developed through Emu Systems’ Pilot Program, Millhaus also explored cost-effective, replicable Passive House construction methods. Through tours, educational events, and industry outreach, the project has become a local learning resource and a built example of how elegant design and measurable high performance can successfully coexist.

Rebuilt after the Marshall Fire on a site cherished for decades, this home transforms loss into opportunity. The design was reimagined from the ground up to clarify light, views, and spatial flow. Elevated above the street on a sloping site, the main level reads as a quiet refuge, while shed roofs replace traditional gables - their broad surfaces topped with solar panels, giving the home a contemporary profile tailored to the context.

Inside, a glazed monostringer stair and stone-wrapped elevator anchor a light-filled circulation spine. Kitchen, dining, and living spaces wrap the northwest and south edges, capturing daylight throughout the day, while a music room, guest bedrooms, and a conservatory offer flexible living space for hobbies and visiting family.

The entire upper level is a private sanctuary: the primary suite features an elevated deck with view corridors to the mountains, a spa-like bath with steam shower and soaking tub, a second private deck, and a meditation landing bathed in morning light. The lower level holds a guest suite, theater, and pool/bar area, plus a laundry room with custom dog-wash sink providing built-in comfort for the household's pugs.

Sustainability is woven throughout: solar-ready shed roofs, high-performance glazing, and durable, low-maintenance materials - shelter built for resilience and decades of daily life.

Flatirons House sits on a cherished family lot in Boulder’s Chautauqua neighborhood, where the owner grew up and now returns seasonally from the East Coast.

Designed as a compact Passive House, it features single-floor living with a basement for visiting family. A simple, modern form with a single-pitch roof captures iconic Flatirons views and winter sun. Warm wood cladding, natural finishes, and carefully considered sightlines reinforce the connection between the house and surrounding urban context.

Nestled in a lush garden originally cultivated by the owner's mother, the home is both a retreat and a quiet tribute to family legacy.

This project is a Certified Passive House (Passive House Classic). It is a
new house for a family who lost their home in the Marshall Fire, a
devastating fire that burned more than a thousand homes in
Boulder County, Colorado, on December 30, 2021.

Sustainability and resilience are fundamental drivers of the design.
The house is constructed with prefabricated structurally insulated
panels from B.Public Prefab. The 14" thick, heavily insulated panels
will provide R-values of R-52 on the walls and R-59 on the roofs.
The house's design celebrates the thick walls with massing and
material choices that nod to southwestern-style adobe houses, a
typology that the owners particularly like. Clerestory windows and
large glazed openings juxtapose the heaviness of the thick walls,
flooding the home with light and opening it to mountain views.
The house is an all-electric, net-zero, Certified Passive House.

It uses heat pump technology for heating and cooling (albeit low loads,
given the insulation and air-tightness of the envelope), water
heating, and an ERV system for natural ventilation. It includes PV
panels and electric car charging, prioritizing environmentally
responsible companies and material selections.
