declutterandreset.com Hi, It’s so nice to meet you! I’m Alex and welcome to Declutter & Reset Organizing. A mom of two that faced big life changes including four moves, new jobs, living on my own and needing to find ways to manage my anxiety and overwhelm, I went on a journey to reset my life. Creating an organized space with less clutter has been calming, freeing and inspiring. I wasn’t always this organized. Honestly, I am a messy who learned sytems that work. It took practice and education to get to where I’m at and I’d love to come along side you on your journey. There is no judgement, I’ve seen it all! You want to start but procrastination is easier than motivation. Start small by contacting me and setting up your first session. We will keep moving forward together

Talk soon, Alex

I just had a birthday and this is so true! Read more on the blog: Mid-Life, Perimenopause, Brain Fog and the Kitchen Counter Pile. If you need more support, contact me via the form on my website.

Nobody Warned You (Us) About the Counter Pile aka "Doom Piles"

You walk into the kitchen for a reason. The reason leaves. You stand there next to a pile of mail, a water bottle, a pair of reading glasses you swear you just bought, and a charger that belongs to something you can't identify.

If this has been happening more since your thirties or forties, you are in very good company. In my work with women in Boulder, Lafayette, Louisville, and Broomfield, I hear some version of this constantly: "I used to be so organized. What happened to me?"

Nothing happened to you. A lot of women in midlife are running on less sleep, more responsibility, and hormones that are doing their own thing. Many describe brain fog, word-finding trouble, and a memory that feels like a browser with forty tabs open. (I'm an organizer, not a doctor, so if what you're noticing worries you, please talk to yours. There's no medal for toughing it out.)

What I can tell you is what helps in the house.

Your house can be your external hard drive

When your internal memory is unreliable, the answer is not to try harder. It's to stop asking your brain to hold things the house can hold instead.

The counter pile, by the way, isn't a moral failure. It's a memory system. Those papers sit out because putting them in a drawer means they stop existing. The pile is you saying, "I need to see this or I'll lose it." That instinct is smart. We just need to give it a better home.

Five brain-fog-friendly systems that actually work

Decluttering Isn’t Organizing — And Doing Them in the Wrong Order Is Why Your Systems Keep Falling Apart

Here’s a sentence that changes everything once you actually hear it: you can’t organize your way out of clutter.

I say this to almost every client I talk with, usually within the first ten minutes of our free consultation. Someone tells me they need help “getting organized,” and what I find when I look at their home on our video chat isn’t a lack of bins, labels, or a good system. It’s too much stuff living in a space that was only ever built to hold a reasonable amount of it. No basket, no label maker, no gorgeous drawer divider set from Container Store is going to fix that.

It’s not an organizing problem. It’s a decluttering problem wearing an organizing problem’s clothes.

If you’ve ever organized a space — really organized it, labeled bins and everything — and watched it fall apart in three weeks, this is probably why. You skipped a step. Or more accurately, you did the steps in the wrong order.

The Crafter's Dilemma: When Your Creative Space Stops Feeling Creative | Louisville, Boulder, Broomfield — Declutter & Reset Home Organizing 05/28/2026

Here's something I understand personally: a creative space can go from inspiring to overwhelming faster than almost any other room in the house.

One minute you have a beautiful sewing corner, fabric sorted by color, notions in their place, projects you're genuinely excited about. And then life gets busy, a few projects pile up, you buy some yarn you couldn't resist, and suddenly the room that was supposed to be your sanctuary feels like one more thing to deal with.

If you're a crafter — a sewist, a knitter, a quilter, a mixed media maker, someone with seventeen half-finished projects and absolutely no regrets — this one is for you.

Why craft spaces are uniquely hard to organize

Craft spaces aren't like kitchens or living rooms. You can't just find a home for everything and call it done, because the stuff keeps changing. New projects come in. Supplies accumulate. That fabric you bought two years ago for a project you haven't started yet feels impossible to get rid of because you might still use it. The half-finished knitting project on the needles can't be put away because then you'll lose your place entirely.

Add to that the fact that most crafters are also collectors at heart. The joy is partly in the having — the beautiful skein of hand-dyed yarn, the fabric print you fell in love with at the shop in Longmont, the buttons you've been saving since forever. Organizing a craft space means working with someone who understands that the stuff isn't just stuff. It means something.

I knit and sew myself. I get it. Contact me for a free consult--I'd love to help you!
