🏗️ A whole room of builders.

The big yellow LEGO bins came out and every table filled up fast. Some students built vehicles, some built towers, and a few just sorted pieces until inspiration hit.

Our classrooms are designed to give students room to work together, whether it is on a math packet or a brick-by-brick build.

🧱 Every build starts with an idea.

This student had a clear plan and a table full of LEGO pieces in every color to make it happen. She stopped just long enough to smile for the camera before snapping on the next piece.

Open-ended building lets kids design, test, and fix their own ideas, the same way engineers do.

🦇 Fall is here, so we built a bat!

Today's craft sheet was "Build a Bat": cut out the wings, color them in, and put the pieces together. This student read through the directions carefully before picking up her scissors.

Following written, step-by-step directions is a real skill, and crafts are one of the most fun ways to practice it.

⚽ Foosball break, and the whole crew showed up.

A quick game at the foosball table turned into a crowd of players and cheering teammates packed around both ends, all waiting for the next goal.

A short active break helps kids reset and come back to their work focused. It also turns classmates into friends.

Brea parents: conference week is next week. Monday September 28 through Friday October 2, and all five days are minimum days.

BOUSD elementary runs on trimesters, and the first one does not close until November 5, so you have about five weeks to act on what the teacher tells you. Brea Junior High and Brea Olinda High are on quarters, closing October 8, with no conference week scheduled at all.

Five early pickups in a row is a lot of afternoons. Our after-school program covers them: supervised pickup, homework finished before home, small-group help.

🎨 Paint trays out, brushes ready.

Art time looked like this today: open watercolor sets, cups of rinse water, and a bin full of crayons in the middle of the table. One student painted her own artist's palette, dabbing a different color into every little well.

Between homework and skill-building, art is where students get to slow down and just create.

🏎️ Built it, rolled it, and showed it off!

This proud builder turned a pile of LEGO bricks into a race car with real spinning wheels, then held it up for the camera with the biggest grin in the room. Every piece was his choice, from the blue body to the front bumper.

Building time gives kids a break from the worksheet while still working on planning, patience, and problem-solving.

🔷 Which shape ends up on top?

Today's worksheet was "Stacking Shapes": look at two shapes, picture one placed on the other, then find the picture that matches. It sounds simple until the triangle hides half the circle. Our students worked through each row, pencils moving and answers written in one by one.

Spatial reasoning like this builds the same thinking skills tested on GATE and math assessments.

⚙️ Gears, wheels, and a big smile!

This builder put together an impressive K'NEX machine with a giant yellow gear and spinning wheels, and was all smiles showing it off.

At OLS, hands-on STEM time gives kids the chance to test ideas, fix mistakes, and feel proud of what they create.

📐 Shapes, patterns, and turns!

Our students sharpened their geometry skills today with "Classify by Pattern" and "Rotating Figures" worksheets, sorting shapes into groups and tracing how each figure looks after it turns.

Small steps like these build the visual reasoning kids use in math class and on tests like GATE.
