You can be sitting quietly, drinking your morning coffee, thinking about absolutely nothing related to your person...

And then—

WOOSH.

It hits.

A memory. A realization. A moment of missing them so intensely that you suddenly find yourself sobbing.

And the strangest part?

It can happen so quickly and so intensely that the emotion seems to arrive before the tears even have a chance to make an appearance.

There is no warning. No gradual build-up. No sad thought that slowly turns into crying.

Just...

WOOSH.

And then, almost as suddenly as it arrived, it's over.

You wipe your eyes, take a breath, and wonder, What the heck was THAT?

I think I expected grief to make more sense—that sadness would arrive gradually and leave gradually.

But sometimes grief apparently has other plans.

Sometimes it simply kicks down the door, knocks you flat, and disappears before you even know what happened.
