I hear this every day. Why are ants so bad right now?

 Ants tend to be at their worst during the spring and early summer for several reasons:

1. Colonies Become Active Again

During winter, ant colonies slow down significantly. As temperatures warm in the spring, the colony becomes active and workers begin searching aggressively for food and water to support the growing nest.

2. Colony Population Explodes

Spring is when queens increase egg production. Thousands of new ants may be developing, which means worker ants must gather much more food. The larger the colony gets, the more ants you see inside and outside.

3. Spring Rains Drive Them Indoors

In Oklahoma, spring rains often flood underground nests or make them excessively wet. Ants may move to higher ground, wall voids, crawlspaces, garages, kitchens, and bathrooms looking for dry shelter.

4. Food Sources Increase

Plants begin producing nectar, aphids produce honeydew, and people spend more time outdoors. Ants have abundant food available and establish well-defined foraging trails.

5. Swarming Season

Many ant species produce winged reproductives (swarmers) during spring and early summer. These males and future queens leave the colony to start new nests, increasing the number of colonies around homes.

6. Warm Temperatures Are Ideal

Most ant species are most active when temperatures are roughly 70–90°F. Spring and early summer provide the perfect conditions before the extreme Oklahoma summer heat arrives.

For Pest Control Customers

One of the reasons ant treatments can seem slow is that the ants you see are only a small percentage of the colony. Non-repellent products and baits work best because the worker ants carry the treatment back to the nest and share it with other ants, including the queen. This process often takes 7–14 days, and sometimes longer for large colonies.

For Oklahoma homeowners, the most common spring invaders are:

* Odorous house ants
* Little black ants
* Pavement ants
* Acrobat ants
* Carpenter ants (less common but important)

That’s why March through June is usually the busiest ant season for pest control companies in Oklahoma. Once the summer heat becomes extreme and conditions dry out, ant activity often decreases somewhat until fall.
