31Y/O Charlotte Woman Woke Up 6 Days After Giving Birth & Her Leg Was Gone, The Nurse Found..

A 31-year-old pharmacy technician from Charlotte, North Carolina had a scheduled C-section and a healthy baby girl. Six days later she woke up in intensive care with her left leg gone above the knee, and her husband asleep in the chair beside the bed, holding her hand.

Naomi Prather had a clotting disorder, which meant blood thinners through an IV after delivery. Standard care. The thing that stops women in her position from dying.

Her levels came back low three days running. The rate was increased twice and the numbers did not move, which is not something that happens to a healthy 31-year-old.

A second-year nurse named Imani Sayles wrote "query infusion delivery" in the chart at 3:40 in the morning. It took eighteen hours for anyone to act on it.

Eighteen hours was enough to save Naomi's life. It was not enough to save her leg.

This is the story of a man everybody loved, of $61,000 in gambling debt nobody knew about, of a search history that included how long a blood clot takes to kill you — and of the five months Naomi spent telling her mother, her sister and her best friend that something was wrong, and being told she was the one who needed help.
