BioLite

BioLite has developed advanced, affordable, clean burning stove technology that combines unprecedented emissions reductions with electricity generation. Open wood fires are inefficient, wasting potential energy and creating toxic smoke due to incomplete combustion. They also use the fire's waste heat to generate electricity to charge external devices like cell phones or LED lights. We offer the BioLite HomeStove, designed for indoor use and more demanding cooking needs in the developing world, as well as the BioLite CampStove, ideal for easy on-the-go use in the wilderness or in your backyard. BioLite HomeStove: Half the planet still cooks on indoor open wood fires and the toxic smoke they emit kills nearly two million people every year—twice as many as malaria. Previous efforts to address indoor smoke with clean cook stoves have failed to achieve the smoke reductions necessary to protect health and have also failed to catalyze consumer demand due to minimal functionality beyond that of a traditional open fire. The BioLite HomeStove immediately reduces the time used on gathering wood or other solid fuels or the money spend on purchasing fuel to support daily cooking. Using half the wood required for an open fire, each stove saves several tons of firewood per year. Families also get access to electricity with stove use, providing a means for charging cell phones or LED lights. More broadly, the efficient combustion reduces deforestation in developing regions where 75% of harvested wood is burned as fuel and dramatically cuts global black carbon, CO2 and methane emissions. Each stove can save 1.5 tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to the impact an American family would have by investing in a hybrid car. By reducing smoke emissions by more than 90%, the stove also has significant health benefits. BioLite CampStove: The BioLite CampStove uses the same innovative technology as the HomeStove, but it is small, portable, and designed for recreational use. The stove allow users to cook as efficiently as they would with gas--without the hassle of carrying fuel canisters. Using sticks, leaves, pinecones, and other readily available biomass, backpackers, tailgaters, and survivalists are now able to cook meals quickly and keep devices charged no matter where you are.
