Not to promote elitism between driver trains but I do believe driving manual for your daily teaches a driver lessons automatic never does.
A common manual-driving myth: engine braking only happens when you downshift.
Downshifting can increase engine braking, but you don’t need to downshift for engine braking to occur.
So what’s actually happening when you lift off the throttle while still in gear? That’s what I’m breaking down in this video.

One of the biggest myths about engine braking: you’re only engine braking when you downshift.
Not quite.
Downshifting can increase engine braking, but it isn’t what creates it. If you drive stick, understanding what’s actually happening helps you use the car’s momentum, gears, and engine more effectively.

If you drive a manual, you're already using one of the best anti-theft devices ever made. 😆
Car thieves want quick and easy. A stick shift usually means they have to know how to drive it first, and that's a surprisingly effective deterrent these days.
Will a manual transmission stop a determined thief? Of course not.
But between a loud aftermarket alarm and a manual transmission, I'll take the one that makes the thief stall the car at the first intersection. 😂

The late '80s German sports sedan war... which side are you on? 🇩🇪🔥
On one side, the BMW E30 M3. Built to dominate touring car racing with razor sharp steering, high revs, and one of the greatest chassis ever made.
On the other, the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II. Wider, wilder, and equipped with one of the most iconic factory wings ever fitted to a sedan. It traded a bit of agility for high speed stability and serious presence.

Everyone has their own way of shifting a manual.
Some grip the shifter with a full fist. Some guide it with three fingers like they're holding a bowling ball. Some channel their inner Fast & Furious and slam every gear.

Most people know 5-speed and 6-speed manuals, but the story started much earlier.
Before "four on the floor" became the standard, many American cars used "three on the tree", with the shifter mounted on the steering column. As performance improved and drivers wanted quicker, more precise shifts, floor-mounted gearboxes took over, eventually leading to the 5 and 6-speed manuals we know today.
One fun fact many enthusiasts don't know: heavy-duty diesel trucks often use 10, 13, or even 18-speed manual transmissions. They achieve this with a range selector and splitter, allowing each gear to be divided into additional ratios for hauling heavy loads efficiently.

This infographic shows the general evolution of passenger-car manual shifters. Four-speeds and floor shifters existed alongside column shifters for years, and some manufacturers adopted newer layouts earlier or later than others. Heavy trucks also use a different shifting system than passenger cars.
