Contemporary music ensemble founded in 2008 and based in NYC, championing musical creativity

Heralded as “a crucial part of the New York cultural ecosphere” by the New York Times, the Talea Ensemble’s mission is to champion musical creativity, cultivate curious listeners, and bring visionary new works to life with vibrant performances that remain in the audience’s imagination long after a concert. Recipients of the 2014 Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, Talea has brought to life more than 40 commissions of major new works since it was founded in 2008. Talea has helped introduce NYC audiences to important works of such esteemed composers as Pierre Boulez, Georg Friedrich Haas, Beat Furrer, Olga Neuwirth, Unsuk Chin, and Hans Abrahamsen. Praised for their “verve and immaculate virtuosity” by the Washington Post, Talea is sought after both in the U.S. and Europe for its range, precision, risk-taking, and superior performance quality. Recent festival engagements include performances at Lincoln Center Festival, Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, the Fromm Concerts at Harvard University, Warsaw Autumn Festival, Wien Modern, Vancouver New Music, and many more. The ensemble has also partnered with institutions from across disciplines, such as the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, the City of Ideas Festival in Mexico, or the Storm King Art Center. Talea’s recordings have been distributed worldwide on the Kairos, Wergo, Gravina Musica, Tzadik, Innova, and New World Records labels, and been broadcast on ORF (Austria), HRF (Germany), and WQXR’s Q2. Talea assumes an ongoing role in supporting a new generation of composers, and has undertaken residencies in music departments at Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, New York University, and many others.

The work of Amadeus Julian Regucera (b.1984) engages with the embodied and acoustical energy of sound and the erotics of its production through concert music, installation, performance art, and video.

His music has been performed by musicians and ensembles such as the Talea Ensemble, Alarm Will Sound, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Linea, EXAUDI vocal ensemble, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, vocalist Elaine Mitchener, violinist Jennifer Koh, Splinter Reeds, Duo Cortona, Third Sound, and the University of California, Berkeley Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to concert music, his practice intersects with visual and performance art, most notably in RIGOR, a collaboration with visual artist Nicolás Rupcich and commissioned by violinist Jessica Ling; Absence in relief an audio-visual installation commissioned by InterMusicSF and Indexical for the Radius Art Gallery, Santa Cruz, California; IMY/ILY – a monodrama for solo percussionist, commissioned by Andy Meyerson (The Living Earth Show); The trauma you keep safe is the pain your pass along for flutist, performer, and video; and the installation Communication, for the Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten in Graz, Austria.

Amadeus currently serves as Senior Curator, Arts & Music at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Drumroll… 🥁 Please join us in welcoming Talea’s newest member, percussionist Mike Truesdell Mike Truesdell!

Come say hi to Mike Truesdell in person at our concerts this season! Some of Mike’s first New York City performances were George Aperghis’ Happy End and Pierluigi Billone’s Mani.Long with Talea, and Mike says that members of Talea have remained his closest musical friends to this day.

Outside of rehearsals and performances with Talea, Mike can be found as a percussion faculty member at Ithaca College and Cornell University, where he shares his passions for living composers, composers of various deadness, and music from around the world with his students. At the moment, he is most proud of his video recordings (available on his YouTube page) and his beautiful shish*to pepper plant.
