We strive to build innovative shared transportation programs with local partners nationwide. Shared Mobility Inc.

(SMI) started with the creation of the nonprofit Buffalo CarShare in 2009, with the goal of bringing innovative transportation options to a region with a high demand for affordable access, becoming the first car share organization dedicated to this type of market. In over six years of operation, BCS shared over 35,000 trips and 1,000,000 miles resulting in 816 tons of CO2 reduced and 600 estimated vehicles either taken off the road or delayed in purchasing. The nonprofit car sharing company’s mission was focused on a social equity platform in which most of the industry tended to ignore. Half of Buffalo CarShare’s members came from a household earning $25,000 or less, which shatters car sharing industry averages. In 2015, Buffalo CarShare transitioned their membership to the self-insured private firm Zipcar to maintain service in light of a flaw in NYS's auto insurance laws that deters insurance agencies from issuing policies to shared vehicle and rental companies. The partnership with ZipCar and Buffalo CarShare proves that the social equity focused model of car sharing is not only viable, but profitable as well. Simultaneously, during Buffalo CarShare’s operations, SMI researched and demonstrated various projects that further pushed the envelope on the car sharing model of transportation. SMI was the first to implement the use of 100% electric vehicles (EV’s) in a car sharing scheme in New York, as well as launch a volunteer driven vanpooling program for the elderly and disabled, supplemented with the use of a wheelchair accessible van. In 2014, SMI spun off a sister organization for car sharing in Albany, New York, Capital CarShare. SMI not only focuses on auto related transportation, but all active modes. In 2012, SMI researched and implemented a brand new bicycle sharing initiative. Buffalo BikeShare was the first operator of the dockless Social Bicycles system. At this time, SMI was the first to facilitate the operation of a bike sharing and car sharing system under the same organization in the country. SMI currently operates Reddy bikeshare and has facilitated multiple bike sharing systems across the country This includes business planning, demonstrations, sponsorship identification and site planning. With the success of bike sharing in Buffalo, in 2014 SMI began conducting feasibility and demonstration projects in multiple cities. The purpose of these demonstration projects was to give a hands on experience to communities interested in an affordable bicycle sharing system.

As part of Project MOVER, SMI's Shane Paul and Alex Maccallini recently spent a day in Ossining, NY with League of American Cyclists Instructors, and participants from Hudson Link, an organization that supports people through education and community-based programs.

Leon and Kareem, League Cycling Instructors trained through Project MOVER, led a hands-on training for the project’s Community E-bike Program. The program gives Hudson Link participants access to e-bikes for everyday transportation.

The group practiced riding the cargo e-bikes, completed bike safety checks, and reviewed the program guidelines and safe riding practices. The training gave participants a chance to get comfortable with the bikes and ask questions before using them on their own.

Thanks to Leon, Kareem, Hudson Link, and our partners at Nelson\Nygaard for making the training possible!

Transportation innovation matters, especially when research is paired with real world implementation.

Shared Mobility Inc. was proud to attend University at Buffalo’s Transportation Innovation and Impact Day, hosted by the UBuffalo Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, and celebrate three new transportation research facilities.

It was exciting to see UB’s work firsthand, including autonomous vehicles, bicycle and driving simulators, and other technologies focused on safer, smarter, and more sustainable transportation.

It was also great to connect with partners and transportation leaders from The City of Buffalo, Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, and other organizations working to improve mobility across our region.

Partnerships between UB and organizations like ours help move new technologies from research into practical community solutions. With nearly two decades of experience implementing innovative and equitable mobility programs, we’re excited about what we can build together here in Western New York.

E-bike safety education is a cornerstone of Shared Mobility Inc.'s work, woven throughout our programs to ensure riders have the knowledge and confidence to ride safely.

Yesterday, Steve Bratspis of our CDPHP Cycle Team represented SMI at the Walk, Bike & Roll New York Symposium in Tarrytown, NY, where he presented on our approach to e-bike safety education. Drawing from lessons learned across our e-bike rebate initiatives, bikeshare systems, and other mobility programs, Steve highlighted the importance of pairing access to e-bikes with comprehensive safety education to support safe and successful adoption.

Thank you to New York Bicycling Coalition for inviting us to speak, and thank you to the organizers for bringing together transportation professionals, advocates, and community leaders committed to advancing active transportation across New York.

The weather is giving summer feels, so we gathered most of the staff earlier this week for a short bike ride to Buffalo City Hall's Observation Deck and then headed to Rosie's Handcrafted Ice Cream on West Utica Street for a sweet treat! 🍧 But not before paying a visit to GObike's founder and newly appointed Parking Commissioner Justin Booth! With bikeshare, less planning is needed for warm-weather skits like these!
