Alexander Calder was born in Philadelphia on 22 July 1898, although for much of his life he believed his birthday was 22 August. When he requested his birth certificate in 1942, Philadelphia City Hall confirmed the July date. Calder paid them to look again. They did. The answer remained the same. Trained as a mechanical engineer, Calder moved to Paris in 1926 and began creating his celebrated miniature circus from wire, cloth, leather and found materials. A visit to Piet Mondrian’s studio in 1930 pushed him towards complete abstraction. The following year, Marcel Duchamp named his moving sculptures “mobiles”; Jean Arp later called the stationary works “stabiles.” “The next step in sculpture is motion.” Alexander Calder, 1932 Calder’s achievement was not simply to make sculpture move. He made air, gravity, balance, chance and time part of the composition. No mobile is ever experienced in precisely the same way twice. Sculpture was no longer a fixed object, but a living event. #alexandercalder #calder #modernart #sculpture #theartbystander 07/26/2026
