Papercraft Miracles

Really excited for our collaboration with Eva Jean called Duly Noted, made possible by a grant from The WASH Project and their fabulous executive director, Ruby Merritt 𝗥𝗨𝗕𝗬 𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗧.

Over the next year we will be working with Eva in our studio to help her produce handmade journals for the purpose of helping people in our community who are struggling with mental health issues. The journals will be available in several places around Buffalo.

We will also be helping her to put on a series of workshops focused on journaling for mental health.

This project is such a perfect fit for our mission to create positive change in the world through art and I’m forever grateful to be able to do this work with such awesome and inspiring women.

People often ask me why I started this business and why I worked so hard to keep it going all these years. And it took me a long time to come up with an answer that really felt like truly encompassed the reason…because there were lots of reasons.

But the pandemic and the pivots we had to make during that time really helped me to see what exactly IS the magic that Papercraft Miracles brings to the world and why does it matter…and it’s this.

This work restores connection—to myself, to others and to the world around me. And not only that, it does the same thing for other people.

I first came up with the idea of Papercraft Miracles way back in college during the hardest year of my life. All in the span of 6 months, my mom died and then on what would have been her next birthday, my dorm burnt to the ground with all my stuff in it while I was in it.

But it was in the wake of all that grief and trauma that I started making artists books about coming back to life after you think you’re gonna die. And making them helped me come back to life—to restore my connection.

But when I shared them with other people something magical happened. Over and over, people would come up to me and say, “I’m not the same person I was before I saw that.” I had made them think and feel differently— I restored their connection too. And I got hooked on helping others to heal in this way and vowed to do it as often and as intentionally as possible.

So that’s why the company is called Papercraft Miracles because making and sharing this art saved me when I literally had nothing. It restores connection over and over again…for me, for others and for the world.

Why SFMOMA Reached Across the Country for These Handmade Upcycled Cards Discover how Buffalo-based studio Papercraft Miracles transformed SFMOMA’s exhibit waste into high-end, handmade stationery for the museum’s annual Director’s Dinner.

Papermaking demo for at !! It was such a great day, despite the rain because I got to hang out with Amy whose project, Mending Our City: One Stitch at a Time was teaching people how to sew using antique and modern sewing machines!

I can’t say enough about so far. It’s reminding me about all the reasons I fell in love with the Infringement Festival over 20 years ago…We are bringing art to the people, not trying to bring people to the art, and I’m HERE for it. ❤️
