We just wrapped up our Paul Cézanne-inspired landscape projects! During the first half of our project I read aloud to the students as they worked. We learned about Cézanne, his artistic style, and his love of painting the French countryside, especially the famous Mont Sainte-Victoire. Students used watercolor to create visual texture within their own french country side.
Today, we finished the top layer of those landscapes with physical texture using collage! Each artist designed, colored, outlined, and cut out their own French-inspired studios/workshop buildings, cypress trees, bushes, and other landscape elements. We then layered these pieces into the foreground of our paintings to create depth, texture, and composition.
Along the way, we talked about each artists creative liberty to choose which medium to use when adding value to their work. We compared creating value with pencil shading to creating value with watercolor and a brush. We also talked about how a kneaded eraser works and how it differs from a traditional rubber eraser, which the kids thought was fascinating!

So thankful that creating gives me the focus that I need so I can do all the rest of the things.. Each leg of the artistic process feeds into the next for me. That is one of the things that I love so much about art.
It has always felt a little irresponsible to put something I love at the top of the priority list when so many other things need my attention. But lately, I've started to make it a non negotiable that I have to paint every morning before I get into my workflow.
What I've found in making this a habit and a non-negotiable for me is that I work better after taking care of myself. (Shocker!) I have more focus, I have clarity. I have vision again after painting. And I need both the refined art process AND the messy, no expectations put on what comes out, in order to have balance within myself. ❤️
