As we near the end of the year, here are some fun stats from this past school year in the IRC!

We’ve had so many amazing discussions about book banning and book challenging this week in the IRC! The IRC display was in the young adult side of the IRC but the visible display lead to questions by our younger junior highers as well. We discussed the difference between challenged and banned books, the ridiculous reasons why some books were banned, and the feasible reasons why books were banned. So many were shocked to find books they have read and loved have been banned or challenged somewhere in America whether current or past. The hallway display did a great job of leading students to the IRC to continue their reactions to reasons why someone somewhere didn’t want them reading these books.

Stop by the IRC after visiting your classrooms and lockers!

The junior high (5th - 8th grade) “Back to School Night” is scheduled for Tuesday, August 12th, 5:00 - 6:30 pm. This is an informal event. Teachers will be available to meet/greet students and families. You are welcome to drop off school supplies, meet the teachers, ask any questions you or your student may have, become familair with scheduling and classrooms, and practice locker use/combination.

When a class finishes a classroom novel that is the first in a series, many students want to go on to the second book. We only keep one copy of most books on our shelves so we rely heavily on other RSA libraries to loan us their copy(ies). These books are ready for students to pick them up. We love that students enjoy what they read!

Today is Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) Day! Celebrate by doing just that! Read! Anything! Even for just 5 minutes if that is all the time that you have!

Today is Take Action for Library Day! This year many libraries and library advocacy workers are focused on supporting the Institute of Museum and Library Services which recently received cuts and layoffs. If this goes through, it will impact the IRC as well as our students. It will also impact our local public libraries. If you feel compelled, contact your local congresspeople to let them know how important libraries are to you! https://www.ala.org/advocacy/show-up-for-our-libraries

Today is National Library Outreach Day! In the IRC we are interpreting this day to meet our patrons where they are. That includes making sure we provide a safe space for our students (even staff). We also want to make sure that there are books that are in each student's reading level and interest. Libraries' goals are to be doors and windows. We want to make sure each student can see themselves in books they read from our library as well as have windows opened up for them to experience the lives of those different from them.
