Memories from BigBear Yoga Festival 2022

Mantra music drifting through the crisp mountain air, pine trees surrounding us, shared meals, laughter, rehearsals, and the joyful anticipation of two back-to-back performances on the festival stage.

Some of my favorite memories, though, were the moments in between—the conversations, the spontaneous laughter, the quiet preparations, and the bonds that deepened through dance.

So many beautiful memories with Jeanette, Sabrina and Katia. A weekend of music, movement, and the magic of dancing together in the mountains.

It’s been two months since our Big Show. ❤️
What happens when something monumental comes to an end?
For a while, you simply can’t stop thinking about it.
The post-production work is finally complete, the photos and memories have been gathered, and the next chapter is slowly taking shape.
And now, it’s time for me to return to my regular rhythm of dance—to let these pieces settle, make space for new ideas, and begin again.

Before choosing a classical dance teacher, look beyond convenience and social media.

Choosing a guru is choosing the person who will shape your child’s relationship with an art form.

Take the time to ask:
• Who was their guru, and what is their lineage?
• How many years have they trained, and under whom?
• What is their repertoire and depth of knowledge?
• Where have they performed professionally?
• How many years have they taught, and what is their teaching experience?
A strong social-media presence can showcase performances, but it cannot replace years of rigorous training, discipline, and professional experience.
I spent decades learning, training, and performing on professional stages. Even after that journey, I chose to take on the responsibility of teaching only in my 40s.
Classical dance teaching is not simply a profession—it carries a responsibility to the student and to the tradition.

Do your homework. Ask questions. Verify credentials. Choose your child’s teacher with care.

Partnering with the Big Bear Yoga Festival has taken RDM Studio wonderfully outside our familiar Desi bubble and into a vibrant world of bhakti—one deeply influenced by Neem Karoli Baba, Ram Dass, Hanuman, mantra and kirtan.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to have an outstanding live band accompany my Devi Flow workshops, beautiful stages to perform on, and most importantly, so much love and respect from the organizers and this community. It has made this collaboration very special to me.

But beneath all the fun is something very close to my heart: sharing the stories of my beloved deities with people who genuinely want to know more about them. Through my Devi Flow workshops and dance, I get to introduce the stories of Durga, Kali, Lakshmi and Hanuman—their power, symbolism, devotion and timeless wisdom.

There is something deeply joyful about taking the stories of the deities I have loved all my life into unexpected spaces and watching them resonate with people from completely different backgrounds.

Different cultures. Different expressions. A shared space for movement, curiosity and bhakti.

Perhaps that is my favorite part of these adventures—stepping beyond familiar circles and discovering that devotion needs very little translation.
