FIRE DISTRICT WANTS YOU TO HELP “KEEP THE WREATH RED”
With the cold weather here to stay and the holidays approaching, the Carol Stream Fire Protection District is implementing its annual “KEEP THE WREATH RED” program. Between the days of December 1st and January 1st, each of the three fire stations will display a beautiful wreath on the outside of each building. Each wreath will be lit with red bulbs. Any time holiday decorations are the cause of a structure fire, a red bulb will be removed and replaced with a white bulb. As you drive by your local firehouse and see the wreath, it should serve as a reminder to be “fire safe” this holiday season.
The Fire District stresses the importance of holiday fire safety because of the large number of residential fires that occur during this time. This program is a reminder for citizens to use proper care when putting together their holiday displays, including lights, electrical cords, candles, Christmas trees and other decorations.
Here are some simple ways to be “fire safe” this holiday season:
-Use power strips with surge protectors instead of extension cords.
- Use decorative lights that bear the label of an independent testing lab.
- Always unplug lights when leaving or going to bed.
- If you have a real Christmas tree, keep it watered constantly.
- If your tree dries out, remove it promptly and store it away from your home until you can dispose of it.
- Make sure your artificial tree is flame retardant.
- Keep trees away from the fireplace.
- Put candles securely in non-tip holders and keep them away from Christmas trees, decorations, curtains, and other combustibles.
- Never leave candles unattended or within the reach of children or pets.
- Always blow out candles when leaving or going to bed.
- Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn, including walls, and always shut them off when leaving or going to bed.
- Never burn wrapping materials in you fire place.
- Finally, make sure you have working smoke detectors on every floor of your home. Test them to be sure!
The goal of the Fire District and the community is to “Keep the Wreath Red” all season long. For more holiday fire safety tips, please call Lieutenant Tim Cicero at 668-4836. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
